A Day in the Life of a Nurse: Surrounded By Angels

From The Heart

As I gazed upon the group of girls that I work with running through my mind were many thoughts. I watched each one of them interact with the residents and notice the care that they give and the way that their hands moved toward them with gentleness. I see which girls made extra special efforts in the care of the residents that they were given charge of for the day and make a mental note to tell that person later on about what a good job they did. I listen to how they speak to the resident and how the resident responds back to them. For the most part, I am pleased.

It takes a special kind of person to work in the health care field. Not everyone is suited for that kind of work and I understand that. It is okay. It is not for everyone. Working in the medical profession, in general, involves a lot of germs and work that most people would cringe at yet these girls get up at 5 o'clock in the morning and come in day after day. They do the work with smiles on their faces and they genuinely care. They put themselves and their families at risk with the chance that they might bring home something contagious. Their paychecks at the end of the week do not reflect what they should be getting for all that they do. Yet, there they are back again on Monday morning ready to begin a new week.

"Angels", I think, "I am surrounded by angels." I truly appreciate these people and my faith in humanity has been restored. There is nothing more blessed than coming home at the end of the day and feeling like you have made a difference in the life of someone else and I completely understand why these angels keep coming back.

I am trying to get going with a career in nursing. In order for me to get into nursing programs anywhere close to where I live I need a CNA license. In order to get THAT I need about $600, money I just do not have. CNA work can be tough, physically. I did it about 12 years ago. Too much time has elapsed for me to renew my license without having to pay for classes and testing. I have a bi-lateral hearing loss, and this along with terrible mouth sores I suffered from an underactive thyroid (that has since been resolved with medication), were the reasons I never chose a career in nursing (or a career, period, for that matter). I am now at a point in my life where I just do not care about my handicap and I will do whatever is necesary to make up for my hearing loss. I think that being hearing impaired all of my life will allow me to have a level of empathy for others that I might not otherwise be able to have.
