Cities with the Best Air Quality

Honeywell AirGenius has announced the best cities as far as air quality goes and I am not shocked to find Memphis was nowhere close. Well, I shouldn’t saw nowhere close because we did rank in the top 100 – 82nd. Hey, we are ranked above Los Angeles, St. Louis, Dallas-Forth Worth, and Philadelphia. I read a statistic recently that said we take over 21,500 breaths a day, but we often don’t think about exactly what we are taking in with each of those breaths. The AirGenius Awards were based on airborne pollen levels, particulates air population, and smoking regulations. If … Continue reading

Fresh Air and Sunshine

I can’t seem to shake this cold. All the cleaning and disinfecting does not seem to be helping. Today I decided to let Mother Nature help get rid of the germs. It was sunny but still cold so I turned off the furnace, put on a coat and opened all the doors and windows. I left the house open for about ten minutes. Long enough to be able to feel the outside air moving around in the house and then I shut everything up. Already the house seems cleaner, fresher, like all the negative energy and germs have been blown … Continue reading

Freaking Out Over Airline Fees

Just when you thought commercial airlines couldn’t suck you dry any more than they already do, several carriers are making headlines for the astronomical fees they charge for severely overweight checked bags. American Airlines reports that it charges passengers a whopping $450 for a bag weighing 71-100 pounds on its Asian flights. Meanwhile, United and Continental Airlines charge $400 for bags that weigh 71 to 99.9 pounds on international flights. According to a USA TODAY survey, those are the most expensive fees that airlines charge flyers these days. I am stunned by the numbers, but at the same time, I … Continue reading

Indoor Air Pollution

I try to be really green with the things I use in my home, like cleaners and air fresheners. The main reason for this is Hailey’s asthma, I try not to subject her to additional chemicals and pollutants. Even though I never use chemicals in my home, the air in your home can be up to 100 times more polluted than the air outside, that’s a little scary considering home is where you spend most of your time. I thought I was doing all the right things, no one smokes in my home, I use vinegar and baking soda to … Continue reading

Keeping Your Indoor Air Clean

How can you keep your indoor air clean? Here are a few less conventional tips and a reminder of the dos and don’ts of indoor air quality . Air out your house. Airing out your house doesn’t need to mean that you open all of the doors and windows, although you can open a window or two to encourage the cross-flow of air. A house should be able to breathe. Make sure that your home is not sealed completely. One warning: if you’re allergic to pollen in the home, … Continue reading

Healthy Home, Healthy Air: Natural Air Pollution

While chemicals can impact the quality of your indoor air, nature can also be the culprit. Keeping clean indoor air means looking at the elements of air quality that make your life challenging and managing those, whether they are natural or chemical in origin. You might think of nature as a pure and wholesome thing, and it certainly is. However, when too much nature accumulates on your floors, on your bedcovers and under the furniture, it can cause allergies. Yes, you can be allergic to the very things that give you joy in nature: things like pets and trees. The … Continue reading
