Tooth Fairy Generous Despite the Economy

Practically everyone is looking toward frugal living in order to deal with the serious issues in our current economy. One entity, however, that is not tightening her belt is the tooth fairy. Should the Tooth Fairy be more frugal or is her generosity in fact related to the recession? According to Medical News Today, the average price of a tooth left under a pillow has actually increased from 2006 to 2007 by 22 percent. The survey, the Tooth Fairy PollSM was conducted by Securian Dental plans, shows that Tooth Fairy gifts varied widely, from five cents all the way up … Continue reading

Fashion Potpourri: Celeb Designers, Saving the Environment and Eliminating Tooth Fuzz

CELEBRITY DESIGNERS Add Wilmer Valderrama’s name to the growing list of celeb designers. (Is there a celebrity out there who doesn’t have a fashion line these days?) The handsome actor recently launched a casual menswear line called Calavena. Valderrama says his clothing collection is made for “stylish guys looking to find trendy, fashionable pieces.” (Take note all you “un-stylish guys.”) Calavena features a premium denim line, embroidered hoodies, super-soft thermals and an entire collection of distressed tees. All About Tooth Whitening

A recent survey found that nearly half of consumers would feel better if their teeth were whiter. Check your choppers in the mirror — are you thinking about tooth whitening? Bleaching won’t harm your teeth, as long as there’s no sort of acid in the ingredients. Hydrogen or carbomide peroxide are whitening agents that help maintain the protective enamel on your teeth; acids like citric acid can strip the enamel away and leave your teeth sensitive. Be sure to read the label if you’re using an over the counter product. A home whitening kit can save you the big bucks … Continue reading

The Joys of Teething

My little guy’s first tooth is right below the surface. I thought he was teething nearly 2 months ago! So, if you are wondering if your baby is teething, it could be that the answer is yes, but it might take a month or two to actually see results. I can see the gums getting red and swollen. While we are definitely behind in the tooth department, it is not abnormal for my kids. Neither one of my other two had teeth until around 10 months old either. I am ready for him to get some teeth though so we … Continue reading

Scour the Shower

It’s hard to believe that a place that you go to get clean can get so incredibly dirty. Personally, I hate cleaning the shower in the master bathroom. I don’t have a problem cleaning the tub, but shower stalls are a pain to scour. Unlike traditional tubs, you can’t fill a shower stall with water and cleaning supplies and scrub down the walls. The shape of a shower stall is also not very conducive to eliminating mold in mildew easily from corners, cracks and crevices. If you have textured shower floors, then cleaning can be even more of a chore. … Continue reading

Are Your Healthy Gifts Helpful or Hurtful?

Giving gifts at the holidays says to friends and family: you’re important. I care about you. I remember you. But sometimes, the gift you choose has an unintended second message: you’re out of shape. You’re unhealthy. You don’t look good. I once had a friend give me a gift certificate for a facial. I’d never had a facial before, never wanted a facial. But I went and got it anyway, and it turned out to be a really negative experience. I’d much rather get an open-ended gift certificate — the particular salon offered a variety of services, many of which … Continue reading

Reading Beauty Labels: What is Urea?

It’s time for another closer look at the stuff that goes into our favorite beauty products. Today’s target: urea. Urea (sometimes known as carbamide) is an organic chemical compound. It is produced by humans and many other mammals, amphibians, and some fish. It is produced when the liver breaks down ammonia and protein or ammonia and amino acids. The kidneys then send urea out of the body along with urine. Urea helps carry excess nitrogen out of the body. Um… sounds like kind of a yucky thing to put into beauty products! But it’s used in cleansers, conditioners, hair dyes, … Continue reading

Too Much Earwax?

In moderation, earwax is a good thing. It helps trap and move dust in the ear canal. But when you have too much earwax, your ears can get clogged. This can be uncomfortable AND make you more susceptible to ear infection. The good news is that it can be relatively easy to treat earwax issues at home. Start with simple ear irrigation: gently squirt room temperature water into your ear. Most pharmacies carry rubber ear bulbs that make irrigation quick and easy. Tilt your head to let water (and hopefully earwax) run out into the sink. Dry your ears carefully … Continue reading
