Are you an avid reader? Do you love your Kindle? You might not love spending money to download books onto it. That is not a problem, though, because Amazon is always offering a selection of free ebooks that you can legally download onto your Kindle reader. Free is good! This week, (and last week), there appear to be quite a few free Kindle ebooks that are cookbooks. Many are for gluten-free diets, and others are for “healthy food” in general. Other books focus on food in a way that makes it safe for people with special dietary needs. Gluten Free … Continue reading

Keeping Your Indoor Air Clean

How can you keep your indoor air clean? Here are a few less conventional tips and a reminder of the dos and don’ts of indoor air quality . Air out your house. A house with good air flow will keep fewer chemicals inside. Airing out your house doesn’t need to mean that you open all of the doors and windows, although you can open a window or two to encourage the cross-flow of air. A house should be able to breathe. Make sure that your home is not sealed completely. One warning: if you’re allergic to pollen in the home, … Continue reading

Why I Don’t Buy Microwave Popcorn

These days it is so easy to fall into what appears to be “normal.” Take microwave popcorn. It is so popular that we assume that whenever someone makes popcorn, this must be the way it is made. But not in my house. The neighborhood kids tend to gather at my house after school on Fridays. With no homework, everyone is ready to play, and ready to eat. I find that popcorn is an inexpensive snack that satisfies. Also, no kid I know seems to be allergic to it. The first time I got the pan out and started heating the … Continue reading

Sores in the Corners of the Mouth

The last few winters have brought me a new problem: the corners of my mouth dry out and crack open. It’s painful, it looks ugly and makes me self-conscious, and I’m having a hard time healing it. If I open my mouth too wide (like for a yawn), anything that has healed cracks open again. It’s very frustrating! You know what that means: time to do some research and write an article. There are a few names for this sort of problem. According to Columbia University’s Go Ask Alice health site, this is known as angular cheilitis, angular stomatitis, or … Continue reading

Sugar and Your Skin

Sugar can be good for your skin on the outside — in the form of an exfoliating sugar scrub. However, the sugar you eat may be ruining your skin! Sugar in your bloodstream can attach to protein molecules to form advanced glycation end products (or AGEs). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs that form in your bloodstream. As these AGEs accumulate, they damage nearby proteins — think of dominoes. Knock one down, and the rest start to fall. The proteins that are most vulnerable to damage from AGEs are collagen and elastin — the protein fibers that keep … Continue reading

What’s In Your Food Storage?

We know we need to be acquiring food storage. We have all been given lists of what we should be gathering, and these lists are wonderful for a place to start. But what we must take into consideration is that everyone’s needs will be different, and we need to be sure to stock up on things we use personally. For instance, at my house, we’d need to store: 1. Lots and lots of diapers. We seem to always have at least one child in diapers. Besides which, those things are great for first aid – if you need a great … Continue reading

I’m Allergic to Sorbitol

Peacefully sleeping, I slumbered in my bed, visions of sugarplums dancing in my head. All of a sudden, I awoke, absolutely terrified. My heart was pounding, my sweat glands were working overtime, and I couldn’t explain to myself the overwhelming feeling of fear that was consuming me. It took me several minutes to calm down, and even more time to fall back asleep. I didn’t know what had happened to me and I was scared. The next night, it happened again, although this time it was even more scary. What if I did this forever? Would I be doomed to … Continue reading

Are You Allergic to Corn?

I’ve been afflicted with horrible headaches for many years. I’ve tried every treatment known to mankind, from medication (like iocaine powder, I developed an immunity to it) to chiropractic (which my back and neck loved, but it did nothing for the headaches.) I was finally put on naproxen, which is the prescription name for Aleve. Brand new on the market at the time, it had not yet been discovered just how hard naproxen is on the stomach. Not only did it not take care of the headaches, but it did a number on my stomach. I didn’t know what else … Continue reading

Food Allergies in the Breastfed Baby- A Frustrating Puzzle

My pediatrician says that I am in an elite group of people that struggle with food intolerances in the breast fed baby. I honestly don’t know how common, or uncommon it is, but I know that trying to figure out this complicated puzzle is not fun and can often lead to feeling frustrated and alone. I’ve shared before about my struggles with figuring out what was wrong with my second child and his tummy issues, and part of me feels robbed to have to go through it again. I feel robbed of a happy baby. I feel robbed of sleep … Continue reading

Hidden Allergens On the Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful for parents of kids who have severe food allergies. The foods that you think might be safe for your child to eat could be full if hidden allergens. Here is a quick list of some things to avoid. Cross contamination can be a big problem at Thanksgiving dinner. All it takes is for one careless person to use the wrong utensil to serve himself some food, and then to put that utensil into a completely different serving dish. Suddenly, the food that your child could have potentially eaten is absolutely unsafe. Turkey may seems like … Continue reading
