Beauty Dos and Don'ts

Here's a list of quick and easy things you can do in your beauty routine -- they won't take much time or effort, and they can make you feel more confident and more beautiful.

Makeup Dos

1. Wash makeup off before bed.
2. Wash makeup off before you hit the gym. Don't stress about people seeing you without your "face" on -- your skin will benefit from the effort.
3. Swap your face powder for blotting papers if you want to cut down on shine. Powder can clog pores; blotting papers won't.
4. Use a hint of shimmer to give your skin a healthy glow.
5. Use a skin toner. It can help your anti-aging treatments work more effectively.
6. Toss your mascara after three months or immediately after you've had an eye infection like pinkeye.
7. Toss your foundation after six months or immediately after you've had a skin infection.

Makeup Don'ts

1. Don't share makeup wands -- for lip gloss, eye shadow, mascara, or anything.
2. Don't line your lips without filling the center, too.
3. Don't go too heavy on the eyebrow pencil -- it can make you look garish.
4. Don't forget to blend. Whether you're applying blush, eye shadow, or even tanning cream, take the time to blend it in for a more natural look.

Other Beauty Dos

• Start at the feet and work your way up when self-tanning. If you start at the top and work your way down, you can get tan creases from all the bending. Prevent the streaks and creases by starting at the bottom!
• Switch your conditioner from time to time -- brand loyalty can leave you with a conditioner that stops working.
• Limit your use of fake nails -- using them long-term can weaken your real nails.
• Limit your use of teeth whiteners. Once every six months is plenty for the over-the-counter treatments.
