For the Beauty of the Earth

I love the hymn, “For The Beauty of the Earth“. It has been one of my favorites for a long time. Last night, my little family took a drive up one of the canyons close to our house to look at the fall colors. I am constantly awe struck by the beauty of the mountains where I live. Growing up in TX, we don’t have mountains, and it seems like the fall colors are not as vibrant as the aspen trees against the evergreens in the mountains. They amaze me, and I feel like it takes my breath away. As … Continue reading

Sleeping Beauty: A Strange Fairy Tale

Charles Perrault’s “La Belle au bois dormant” (literal translation “the Beauty sleeping in the wood”) is a bizarre little tale. Some people might find Walt Disney’s adaptation of the story as soporific as the curse upon Aurora, but at least it has narrative consistency. So many of the things that happen in Perrault’s story leave (modern) readers scratching their heads, and that’s on top of the hefty dose of terrible messages for women, something that didn’t come as a surprise after I read the 17th century Frenchman’s take on Cinderella. Up until the point of the teenage princess’ pricking of … Continue reading

Quick Beauty Tips

Don’t you love waking up in the morning, taking one look in the mirror and wishing you could just go back to sleep? I have to admit that the older I get, the more I see things that weren’t there before and it can be a little discouraging. I am trying really hard to age with grace. However it can be a challenge sometimes to get past it and accept things as they are. At the same time I also know that there are ways we can combat the signs of aging or at the very least, make ourselves presentable … Continue reading

Beauty on the Run

There is nothing worse than waking up late and having to quick get ready and rush out the door. This is especially true if you are a mother and have kids to also get going. No one likes to step outside without looking somewhat put together. So what can you do to create beauty on the run? When it comes to makeup, less is more. It really is true. I do enjoy putting on my eye shadow on some days but there are other days where I really don’t have time to mess with it. If I am in a … Continue reading

Reading Beauty Labels: What is Stearic Acid?

Normally, I’d say it’s a bad idea to put any kind of acid on your face or body. But if you start reading the labels on your favorite health and beauty products, you’ll probably run into this one: stearic acid. Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid, also known as octadecanoic acid. (That’s a mouthful and a half, so I’ll stick with calling it “stearic acid” thank you very much!) Fatty acids are a good thing for the body. They are the acids produced when fats are broken down. Fatty acids are not highly soluble in water and can be … Continue reading

Reading Beauty Labels: Petrolatum

You may run across petrolatum as an ingredient in some of your favorite skin care products. Or, you may be familiar with petroleum jelly — a staple in many medicine cabinets. Moisturizers in beauty products fall into two categories: humectants (which draw moisture out of the air and into the skin) and occlusives. Occlusives trap water in the skin and prevent it from evaporating. Petrolatum is most definitely an occlusive, reducing water loss from the skin by as much as ninety-eight percent in laboratory tests! Other studies have pointed out that petrolatum can help fill in spaces between skin cells … Continue reading

Frugalista Beauty. e.l.f. Makeup Only $1.00 Each Piece

In a recent article, I discussed the Plumping Lip Glaze by e.l.f. which is only $1.00 and considered to be one of the best lip glosses on the market. Well, you really should know about the rest of the product line. I first discovered e.l.f. makeup when I was buying mascara, lipstick, and eyeliner for my daughter’s first play. Since she was only 10 years old at the time, I wasn’t going to spend a fortune of something that she was going to use once and probably lose. Even if she did not lose it, by the time she needed … Continue reading

Do You Let Your Child Run Around Naked in Public?

As much of the nation bakes in the hot, sticky summer heat many youngsters have found a simple way to cool off—-strip! This revealing rite of passage was the subject of a recent article in the New York Times. The tongue-in-cheek piece addressed the appropriateness of children running around naked in public places. It also asked, “How much nakedness is too much?” and questioned why seeing a streaking tot is something that raises eyebrows. I smirked numerous times while reading the article because not 24 hours prior I allowed my own preschooler to run around naked at our neighborhood pool. … Continue reading

Should I Use Natural Beauty Products?

When we become pregnant, we suddenly become more aware of the foods we eat and the products we use. Companies making natural beauty products tout their brands as the healthier choice. You may be wondering if you should switch from your traditional health and beauty products in favor of natural products. It turns out, there may be cause for alarm. When you read the ingredients on your shampoo bottle, hand cream or other products, you will notice a few things. One is that few of the names listed can even be pronounced.
