Did Your Deodorant Stop Working?

The deodorant/antipersperant aisle at the store is full of options. Sporty, teen, extra strength, spray, invisible, transdimensional, does the dishes too, etc. I used Secret because that was what my mom used… and I stuck with it for years. One day, I noticed that it wasn’t working as well as it used to. The powder fresh scent wasn’t lasting as long, and I was starting to feel sweaty. Betrayed! By my favorite deodorant! Oh, the horror! Heartbroken, I switched to another brand — Suave, if you’re curious. I’ve more or less been switching between the two every few years now, … Continue reading

Free Women’s Deodorant Sample + Coupon

“You stink! Haven’t you ever heard of deodorant?” Okay, so maybe you’ve never actually said it to someone, but I’m sure we’ve all thought it. I used to work with someone whose custom it was to bathe once a week and only once a week. She would bathe on Sunday afternoons between two and four. She never missed that weekly bath! By Friday, she smelled pretty ripe, and so did our cramped little office. I think the least the company could’ve done for the rest of us was to move her to an office with windows. It wouldn’t have done … Continue reading

Body Odor

Did you know that our bodies produce two types of sweat? Eccrine is a clear, odorless sweat that helps regulate body temperature. Apocrine is produced by glands in the armpits and groin that can get stinky when it interacts with bacteria on the skin. So what can you do to fight offensive body odor? Wash daily. Use a deodorant or antibacterial soap. Use deodorant daily. Pick a deodorant that contains metallic salts (like aluminum or zinc). Roll-ons and sticks usually give better coverage and protection than sprays. Use an antiperspirant. This can slow down apocrine sweat production. Look for an … Continue reading

Cats and Their Glands: A Very Stinky Problem

A secret stink bomb Those of us with dogs know that some aspects of canine ownership can be really gross. One of the worst has to do with scooting: when our dogs do this, it means they’ve got a build-up in their anal glands that they’re looking to relieve. Ew. We can either let our dogs slowly relieve themselves over time, give them a hand (more ew…), or have a veterinarian or groomer do it. My husband always handles this for our dog; he says it’s not so bad, and I’m happy to let him do it. I’ve made it … Continue reading

The Buck Stops Here

(That was then) I’ve shared a lot about my daughter on this blog: Ladies and gentlemen: Exhibit A Exhibit B Exhibit C Exhibit D Exhibit E Heck, I could go through the entire alphabet twice with the number of anecdotes I’ve posted detailing the trials and tribulations of raising a child in the 21st century. My precious peanut was barely two years old when I started writing here. She’s seven now… going on 17. (This is now) I’ve rarely censored myself while serving up slices of our suburban life. I didn’t really need to. After all, I never saw the … Continue reading

Dogs and Guilt: A Case Study

I recently read a study, I don’t remember where now, that claimed to definitively prove that dogs don’t feel any guilt. Researchers left a variety of dogs alone in a room (one dog per room) with some treats. All the dogs were scolded when the humans came back, whether or not they actually got into the treats. Each dog reacted to the admonishment, no matter what it had done. In fact the innocent dogs, the ones that had left the treats alone, acted even more ashamed of the supposed crime than the guilty ones. The researchers concluded that dogs aren’t … Continue reading

The Foodaholic Marries the Health Nut

When I married my husband, he worked in a health food store. He ate dandelions (by choice). He went jogging barefoot (expels built-up electricity from the body). He drank huge cups of herbal tea he brewed himself. He did yoga. He used herbal oils instead of deodorant (which has aluminum in it). He brushed his teeth with baking soda (because the fluoride in toothpaste is carcinogenic). I thought, “He’ll loosen up after we’re married. I can work with this.” When my husband married me, I worked in a floral shop, which kept me hopping all day. I kept myself going … Continue reading
