Parental Dilemma: No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service

Apparently the home of the Whopper has a thing against pigs… or at least little piggies. Just ask Jennifer Frederich. The young mother recently made a pit stop at a Burger King restaurant in Missouri with her 6-month-old daughter, but shortly after she ordered her meal the manager of the Sunset Hills restaurant threatened to kick her out of the eatery because her baby wasn’t wearing shoes. The manager noted that the fast-food restaurant has a strict “No Shoes, No Service” policy and demanded that Frederich find footwear for her child due to “health concerns.” According to local news reports, … Continue reading

China’s Airport—What To Expect If You Are Going To The Olympics

Beijing Capital International Airport… it may not be a place many Americans are familiar with. But, by this time next year millions of world-class athletes along with their friends, family members, and fans of the Olympic games will have spent at least a few hours in it. Namely in the newest portion of it—Terminal 3. According to city officials, when the massive steel and glass structure opens to the public early next year it will be among the world’s largest airport terminals. Not only will it be one of the biggest, but it will also be one of the most … Continue reading

Shrek—Health Role Model For Kids?

He’s the animated ogre who taught kids to love their appearance—no matter what. He was a hit on the big screen and was later adopted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to be a health advocate. But, now the green guy’s role with the department may be in jeopardy. A children’s advocacy group wants the Department of Health and Human Services to strip Shrek of his role as spokesperson (spokes-ogre) for an anti-obesity drive. Executives with the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood say the latest Shrek movie–“Shrek the Third”—which is scheduled to be released next month, has … Continue reading

Fast Food Kids’ Meals—How Healthy Are They?

My small fry loves French fries more than I would like her to… but I know she isn’t the only 3-year-old out there who begs for the greasy potato strings when driven by those famous golden arches. What about you? What are your children eating for dinner tonight? If your answer contains the words: Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions (you get the idea)… then this blog is for you. I happen to be a parent who loathes having to stop at fast food restaurants for any meal. However, since we do travel quite a bit I … Continue reading

Prince Charles vs. McDonald’s

In this corner… we have His Royal Highness, Charles, the Prince of Wales: A 58-year-old father of two who likes to grow his own organic vegetables. And, in this corner, it’s the MacDaddy of all fast-food giants, home of the clown bearing its name, and a host of other greasy (yet yummy) menu options–McDonald’s. Ding! Ding! Let’s get ready to rumble! Okay, perhaps, I am overdoing it a bit. After all, the alleged feud between the famous British royal and the fast food chain may not be as bad as many first thought. So how did all of this get … Continue reading

McDonald’s Makeover—Strawberry Shakes and Stationary Bikes

Shakes and stationary bikes? French Fries and foosball? Big Macs and basketball? McDonald’s is getting a makeover… one the fast food giant hopes will be a hit with both parents and children. Say so long to the slides found at the traditional McDonald’s PlayPlace, the burger-and-fries company is ripping them out and replacing them with climbing ropes, stationary bicycles and electronic dancing games at SOME of its restaurants. If the new R Gyms (R as in Ronald McDonald) prove to be successful in their test restaurants you may soon see them popping up at your neighborhood McDonald’s. The R Gyms … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Feasts And Your Health—Adding It All Up

Happy Thanksgiving! Whether your turkeys and pumpkin pies are in the oven or half way to your thighs—I hope your holiday feast is (or was) a memorable one. Let’s face it; Thanksgiving is not a day one wants to start a diet. In fact, I think there is an unwritten holiday rule, which states that overeating is a prerequisite on Thanksgiving. (Personally, I eat whatever I want and as much as I want and then run a few extra miles the next day.) There’s little doubt that most people indulge on Thanksgiving, but do you really know how many calories … Continue reading

Burger King Causing A Whopper Of A Health Problem In Spain

Here’s something you don’t hear everyday: government officials are trying to force a famous fast food giant to yank a commercial–for health reasons. Spanish authorities are asking Burger King to abandon an ad campaign for its monster XXL burger – the caloric equivalent of eating 10 fried eggs – because it violates a Spanish initiative against obesity. According to the country’s Health Ministry, the fast food chain has been warned for more than a week that its commercials for the massive burger go against an agreement signed by the Spanish Federation of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs, of which Burger King is … Continue reading
