Lemon Pepper In My Eye

When I tried to go to sleep last night, my hungriest child requested food. Because I grew up being hungry all the time, even though my parents weren’t direly poverty-stricken, I let him. An interesting dialogue resulted: “Dad, there’s nothing to eat!” “You’ve got chicken in one crockpot and beef in the other. Just put some lemon pepper on it. That makes everything taste good…” Suddenly, I sense someone standing over me. I roll over and find myself looking up, eyeball to bag of lemon pepper. Small bits of lemon flavoring and pepper fall off the bag, going into my … Continue reading

Elephants and Chili Peppers

Misbehaving elephants in northeastern India are leaving their habitats and wreaking havoc. Wandering elephants have destroyed homes, decimated crops, and trampled people. Wildlife experts are trying a somewhat unconventional method to keep elephants away from villages near the elephant habitats: the world’s hottest chili. Fences around villages and fields are smeared with automobile grease and bhut jolokia, the ghost chili. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the ghost chili is the world’s hottest chili pepper. Conservationists have also used chili smoke bombs to keep the elephants away from residential and growing areas. Dried chili and straw lit on … Continue reading

Spicy Black Pepper Cookies

I almost feel as if I should put a question mark at the end of that title as if it were a whole sentence. Martha Stewart adds cayenne pepper to many of her sweet desserts that feature cinnamon to give it that ‘kick’ so when the recipe for these black pepper cookies came across my desk I wasn’t as skeptical as you’d think. I’m no Martha, but I figure if she can do it, so can I! I like bringing these to a cookie exchange. No one ever believes that they have black pepper in them. But if you try … Continue reading

Cayenne Pepper

Hot red peppers aren’t just for spicy foods! Cayenne pepper has a host of medicinal uses, too. Cayenne pepper is native to subtropical and tropical zones around the world — in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. The spice has probably been used for thousands of years! Explorer Christopher Columbus is the first Westerner credited with taking note of food flavored with hot red pepper. There isn’t much in the way of literary evidence of cayenne pepper; there is no word for cayenne in ancient tongues like Chinese, Latin, Sanskrit, and Hebrew. Perhaps the first appearance of hot red pepper … Continue reading

Snow Day Part III

In the midst of my phone conversation with my husband, our son noticed that his aunt (my sister), who lives next door in the other side of the duplex, was outside shoveling the driveway.  Since her work was canceled because of the snow too, I invited her to spend the day with us. While I started making the coffee ice cream base, my sister entertained my three year old and one year old by reading books and singing songs with them. So far they were really enjoying the snow day. Soon enough my husband arrived at home with a work … Continue reading
