Cold Relief Away From Home

Are you at home, close to your medicine cabinet every time a sore throat strikes? I’m not. I can remember coming down with a nasty upper respiratory infection while I was on a long car ride. With every mile, my throat hurt worse and worse until I was just about ready to cry. I didn’t even have a cough drop in my purse, just miles of misery. One of the best things you can do to relieve a sore throat is to gargle with warm salt water. But what can you do if you’re away from home or stuck at … Continue reading

PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities

Voting for PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2010 is still open. I read on Facebook that octogenarian Cloris Leachman, apparently not to be outdone by that minx Betty White, is currently one of the forerunners in the contest. Who will 2010’s winners join as sexy vegetarian celebrities? Newly single Shania Twain won in 2001, the first year the contest was held. Shania said she became vegetarian when she married her ex, Mutt Lange. At least she took something good away from the marriage. In 2002, PETA decided to have a sexiest male and female vegetarian celebrity. The male honors went … Continue reading

Can Coughing Hurt the Baby?

Pregnant women experience coughing to varying degrees. Often the cough is related to a cold or flu type virus. In this case, the cough will gradually improve and cease within several days or even weeks. However, some women experience chronic coughing throughout part of their pregnancies. When the cough is related to an illness, your doctor may prescribe home remedies, medicines or both. Medicinal recommendations will depend on the type of cough and may include antibiotics, allergy medications or prescription or over the counter cough medicines. Home remedies can be surprisingly effective for a range of symptoms, including cough. Tea … Continue reading

Romance in the Garden

Do you have a garden? Have you thought of your garden as a place of romance? As any of you who are regular readers of my blogs will know I am not a gardener. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the garden. I enjoy the benefits of tasty vegetables Mick grows. His fresh tomatoes are amazing – far tastier than those in shops. And I’m eagerly waiting for the first passion fruit, my absolutely favorite fruit, to ripen. Knowing what a fan I am Mick has planted several along the back fence and three more along a trellis plus one … Continue reading

Life Without Murphy

Life without Murphy hasn’t been very much fun. “Wait a second,” you might be wondering. “Life without Murphy? Where did he go?” The Surgery We dropped him off at the specialist’s office early Wednesday morning for his paw surgery. Luckily Wayne was able to come with. Turns out we needed each other. It was surprising how much we both broke down once the vet tech came and escorted Murphy away. I think I’d always get nervous if any of my pets had to go into surgery, but I think I get especially nervous because my beloved Mackie died after what … Continue reading

Airborne Isn’t All it’s Claimed to Be

A writer friend of mine (who you’ll be meeting soon, I promise) tipped me off to the news that Airborne is settling a twenty-three million dollar class action lawsuit for false advertising. A little bit of history: Airborne was created by a teacher as a way to prevent colds (and treat them if you already had one). The product was created in 1999 and by 2006 had made more than one hundred million dollars. Not bad for a school teacher, huh? Too bad 2006 was the year the trouble started. A TV news report questioned the truth of Airborne’s claims. … Continue reading

Where Coughing Comes From

Coughing is a common ailment that sends plenty of people running to the doctor’s office. Occasional coughing can be good for you — it can clear out particles in the lungs that can lead to infection. Persistent coughing isn’t quite so helpful. Most of the time, a cough is a symptom of something else. Maybe you’ve got allergies or post-nasal drip. Maybe a medication (like a nasal spray) is making your throat irritated. Maybe something more serious — like a heart condition, serious sinus infection, the flu, or gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD) — is hiding behind that cough. Your doc will … Continue reading

Still Working on the Christmas Fudge

Christmas 2007 is long gone. The tree and all the trimmings have been tucked away, the house is clean and all the gift cards have been spent. I generally breathe a sigh of relief when the first week of January rolls around and I can focus on the next big holiday (my birthday). This year, however, there is just a smidge of the holiday that lingers—I am still working on a tin of homemade fudge… This seems unusual to me—I don’t know if it is because my kids are growing up and have less of the sweet teeth than they … Continue reading

I’m Scared To Be Alone with Him

The following is based on a personal experience I had with an abused wife. The names have been changed in an effort to protect everyone involved. The scariest part of this story is that it happens all the time and while we know that abuse occurs, it can happen right in front of us without even knowing it. Her Name Was Amy Amy lived three doors down from my family. She was a great lady and someone I would consider a very good friend. She and her husband Ed had been married for more than a decade when I knew … Continue reading

Where is the Glow?

When I first found out I was pregnant, I remember feeling equal parts excited and nervous. There was the initial disbelief and the waiting until I could take a second home pregnancy test to confirm my initial findings. That nervousness expanded to real butterflies and I called my doctor. I went in and one blood test later – we knew for certain I was pregnant. What was more amazing was that I discovered my pregnancy just two and a half weeks into the pregnancy – so I had LOTS of time to savor this experience over the coming months, The … Continue reading
