Cold Weather Fitness Tips

When the weather is bad, it's hard to stay motivated. On a really cold, wet day, it's hard to even want to leave the house to head for the gym or go for a walk. Don't give up on your health during the colder months! These tips can help you stay warm when the weather turns brisk.

  • Dress in layers for your workout. When you start your exercise, you'll still be cold and will need the extra warmth. As you heat up, you can take off as many layers as you need to -- and put them back on if you get cold.
  • Wear a hat. Without a hat, a lot of heat is lost through your head. Make it warm, and make it comfortable so you'll want to wear it! Avoid itchy or uncomfortable hats.
  • Pick up weather-resistant gear for rainy or snowy workouts. You won't want to be outside if you're wet and cold.
  • Wear reflective gear if you are going to be outside at dawn or dusk. This is more to help people on the road spot you, rather than make you more comfortable -- but what can be more comfortable than NOT getting hit by a car?
  • Distract yourself with company! Get a workout buddy to help you stay motivated and dedicated during the worst of winter.
  • On the really cold days, have an alternate plan. Pick up some fun workout DVDs or make plans to visit a friend who has some home gym equipment.

The real benefit of sticking to your workout during the colder months? You can work harder and burn more calories without really feeling it. In cold weather, your body still generates lots of heat -- but that heat dissipates faster. You'll be working at higher intensities, but without feeling sweaty and uncomfortable.
