Blogging Your Health

We live in an age of information. Sometimes, it seems harder to disconnect from phones, email, and computers than it is to stay connected! So how much (or how little) personal information and experience do you put out there? Social networking sites have made it possible for anyone and everyone to find an audience of friends, family, coworkers, and even relative strangers. Again, the question of how much do you (or don’t you) say about your everyday life is important. This sort of thing is on my mind lately in regards to health. Do you talk about your health or … Continue reading

Cancer Statistics

Prevention magazine recently teamed up with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to poll American women about cancer. They got some interesting results! More than fifty percent of women polled have a close friend or relative who has been diagnosed with cancer. That is a mixed blessing — it means there are a lot of people with cancer, but it also means that a lot of women are getting tested. 92% of women over forty are scheduling mammograms to detect breast cancer. 85% of women surveyed had a mammogram in the last two years. 94% of women polled … Continue reading

Here are some tips to help lower your risk of developing cancer — after all, prevention is the best medicine! Cut back on the couch time. And the desk time. And the beanbag chair time. Lengthen and strengthen your workouts for better cancer protection. Aim for a forty-five to sixty minute workout five days per week to lower your risk of breast cancer by twenty percent. Workouts after … Continue reading

The Best Healthy Food on a Budget

Most of us are familiar with the Ramen every night diet. It isn’t a plan to lose weight, rather a plan to actually afford food, and it has been made famous by college students or anyone just starting out with only a limited budget. But the Ramen Noodle diet isn’t exactly a healthy one. The “meal” contains high levels of sodium and carbs and pretty much zero nutrients. Yes, it will fill you up for less, but it isn’t something you can use to feed a family and keep them all healthy. Another source of cheap food that people often … Continue reading

Green up Your Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day to honor all those that have served in the military. It is also a day when a lot of people will have family and friends over and grill out. (This image is from MorgueFile.) But, you can still be green while doing all of this. If you are going to visit a loved one’s grave, take real flowers. I know a lot of people tend to purchase plastic flowers because they last longer, but real flowers will naturally decompose, whereas plastic flowers will eventually have to be removed by the groundskeepers and who knows when … Continue reading

Unhealthiest Cookbooks for 2011

I love watching The Food Network. And by love, I mean I can name off a list of chefs like it is nobody’s business. Sometimes I see the stuff they cook on there and want to make it myself (provided it isn’t too complicated). But, the recipes are not always healthy, which some U.S. nutritionists pointed out on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Which chefs in particular did they call out? One was Chef Jamie Oliver for his meatball sandwich. The sandwich, which contains minced beef, mustard, an egg, ciabatta, smoke pancetta, Jarlsberg cheese, red cabbage, red onion, mint, … Continue reading

Just Out of Curiosity …

Today, I was mailed a flyer from Anthem Blue Cross that gave a list of the things that this insurer considered to be “preventative care”. Americans can go to HealthCare.gov to read what the federal government has, by law, included under “preventative care”. I wondered how well these two lists matched each other. I have already canceled my health insurance policy with Anthem Blue Cross. So, this blog is basically an exercise designed to satisfy my curiosity about how well, or how poorly, this insurer is following the laws regarding the types of health treatments and tests that are officially … Continue reading

Your Medical Family Tree Could Be Inaccurate

Many genealogists take the time to put together two different types of family trees. The traditional family tree shows connections between one ancestor and another. A medical family tree can give you, and your doctor, clues about health issues that you might be at risk for. However, if your medical family tree is inaccurate, then it isn’t of very much value after all. When you gather information for a medical family tree, you are doing it for the purposes of creating a tool that could give you clues about your health. One of the important things to track for a … Continue reading

Medicare May Soon Cover STD Exams

Medicare and Medicaid may soon cover the cost of testing for sexually transmitted diseases. This is one part of a new initiative to expand the coverage of preventative health care. This coverage will be beneficial to the elderly, the disabled, and the pregnant women who are using Medicare or Medicaid health insurance. It is very important to have good health. In general, people who are in good health feel good, live longer, and are more able to actively participate in their lives than people who are sick. One of the things a person can do in order to stay healthy … Continue reading
