Ask a Baby Blogger: Can I Still Breastfeed if my Baby is Lactose Intolerant

Yesterday, I answered a reader’s question about whether or not it was possible to be unable to digest breast milk due to lactose intolerance. We discussed the difference between primary lactose intolerance and secondary lactose intolerance. While primary lactose intolerance is extremely rare and is a genetic disorder, secondary lactose intolerance is always caused by damage to the gut. It is a temporary condition as long as the gut is allowed to heal. What causes secondary lactose intolerance? Anything that damages the gut, where lactase is produced, can cause secondary lactose intolerance. The condition need not be permanent however, as … Continue reading

Acidophilus

Health confession time: I have trouble with dairy products. When I was a baby, I was seriously lactose intolerant; though I’ve grown out of it to some extent, I still have trouble from time to time. My aunt — who is a nurse — came to my rescue one day when she recommended I take acidophilus. Now when I do have a lactose problem, the acidophilus makes a HUGE difference in the duration and severity of the reaction. Acidophilus is one type of good bacteria in the human digestive system. There are more than four hundred different good bacteria; they … Continue reading

How Do Vitamins Work?

Lately, I’ve been looking at different vitamins and what they do for the body. Vitamin A helps your vision; vitamin D helps build strong bones. Other vitamins promote healing (like vitamin C and vitamin E) or energy production (the B-complex vitamins). Every vitamin does something different… but how do they work? There are two different types of vitamins. Some vitamins are fat soluble — like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. This means the vitamins are stored in the fat tissues in your body — especially in the liver. They wait until your body needs them, and … Continue reading

Lactose Intolerance – Can Your Toddler Suddenly Develop It?

I’m lactose intolerant. I have been lactose intolerant my entire life. I remember as a small child, I would refuse to drink milk or eat ice cream or eat anything that was dairy – up to and including cheese. It took me years to even try cheese. I worried about my daughter and whether or not she would develop lactose intolerance, particularly after a bad bout with a stomach flu when she was about 13 months. She couldn’t hold anything down. It took about three days for her to get better and during that time she refused anything to drink … Continue reading

Common Pet Myths: True or Untrue?

Many of the “facts” we grew up hearing about pets are false.  For example: who hasn’t seen countless images of a content cat licking cream out of a saucer?  When I got a cat in my childhood I remembered that image, and left out a bowl of milk for him.  He sniffed it and threw up.  This happened nearly every time I tried to give him milk; even if he didn’t spit up, he never touched the stuff. Because it turns out, not all cats can drink milk.  Some of them can, but lactose intolerance is as prevalent among cats … Continue reading

Transgenic Cow Makes Hypoallergenic Milk

Food allergies are to be taken very seriously. Exposure to an allergen can lead to death. There are many children, and adults, who are severely allergic to milk. Scientists have created a cow that produces hypoallergenic milk. This brings up some interesting questions for parents of kids who are allergic to, or intolerant of, milk. Milk allergies can range from a slight intolerance to a very serious allergic reaction. For some, it is the lactose that causes problems. Others are allergic to the whey in the milk. Whey is a mix of about ten different proteins, including one called Beta-lactoglobulin. … Continue reading

Genetics and genealogy are two entirely separate fields of study that have begun to overlap in recent years. Scientists have been looking into the DNA of Oetzi the “Iceman”. It is pretty amazing what they could learn about him from his genes! Imagine how much could be learned about your ancestors through their DNA. Oetzi, who is also called “the Iceman”, is the name that was given to the 5,300 year old body that was found in 1991. He was found frozen in the Italian Alps. His name comes from the Otz valley portion of the Italian Apps that he … Continue reading

Study Shows Milk in Baked Foods Helps With Allergy

A study shows that children who have an allergy to milk can outgrow their allergy if they are exposed to increasing amounts of milk that has been baked into food. This is important for parents of children who have this food allergy to be aware of, so they can start the process of milk exposure early. There was a study done by researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. They looked at 88 children who had been diagnosed as having a milk allergy. The children were between the ages of 2 and 17. The researchers evaluated each … Continue reading
