Learning Disabilities and Left-Handedness

What hand does your child write with? Researchers have started to recognize the connections between brain development, left-handedness, and learning disabilities. It appears that the risk of developing learning disabilities, or mood disorders, has something to do with the way a person’s brain is wired. It has been estimated that around 10% of people are left-handed, and another 1% of the population is mixed-handed, (meaning that this group of people do not have a dominant hand). This means that the majority of people are right-handed. Most people write, eat, and do other daily tasks with their right hand. This is … Continue reading

Study Shows Dyslexia is not Related to Intelligence

A study that was funded by the National Institute of Health shows that the intelligence level of a child is unrelated to the specific brain pattern that causes the learning disability called dyslexia. This finding could change how specialists are currently diagnosing dyslexia. The study was led by Dr. Fumiko Hoeft at Stanford University. The researchers focused on a group of 131 children. The children ranged in age from seven to sixteen years old. Kids in this group had a range of reading abilities, and a range of IQ scores. The study found that evidence of dyslexia was an independent … Continue reading

Mom Gene Found?

Are some women just meant to have children? And while all of us could be wonderful, nurturing mothers, not all of us “need” to be. Apparently, the study shows evidence for the existence of a “mom” gene. It is important to note that the study was done with female mice, not female humans. I would like to think that we might be a little more complicated than rodents, although … Continue reading

FDA Warns: Black Licorice Can Harm Your Heart

If you will be dipping into the Halloween candy this year, you might want to skip the black licorice. The FDA has issued a new warning that says that black licorice can harm your heart. In fact, several other studies conclude that it can harm even more than that. First, let us note that the warning concerns adults (although, I imagine parents will want to take heed as well) who consume at least two ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks. While most of us want a little variety in our candy, there are no doubt … Continue reading

By now you have probably heard about little four-month-old Storm, whose parents, Kathy Witterick, 38, and her husband, David Stocker, 39 have decided to keep their infant son/daughter’s gender secret from their friends and family and the world. Not even the grandparents know if little Storm is a he or a she. The Canadian couple say that they want their infant to develop its own sexual identity and not have to conform to gender norms. The couples two older children, both boys are encouraged to shun gender norms for boys and dress or act any way they wish in regard … Continue reading
