Proponents of natural birth methods and many midwives swear by using evening primrose oil to help ripen the cervix. Evening primrose oil contains prostaglandins, which are used for inducing labor. The Let’s Talk Pregnancy Blog Top Ten: How to Induce Labor Naturally

If you’re attempting to have the most natural labor possible, you’re going to want to avoid artificial induction at all costs. Not only are artificially-induced contractions often significantly stronger and more painful, but starting labor unnaturally can likely lead to further complications. The current state of your cervix will determine how likely the onset of labor is. No amount of any of these, save number one maybe, will produce a baby if it’s not time. Sure, there are plenty of old wive’s tales for starting labor naturally, including eating spicy foods or taking a ride down a bumpy road. But … Continue reading

Late Trimester Test: The Cervical Exam

As your due date approaches, you’ll start getting more and more checks by your doctor.  Your appointment schedule will increase to every two weeks from around week 30, and then every week from around week 37.  In addition to the fetal heartbeat check, you’ll probably have your belly measured as well, and your provider will feel around your stomach to determine the baby’s position.  Some doctors might even do a vaginal exam for this, if they’re having trouble determining where the baby is. You’ll get your group B strep test, and this might also be around the time you’ll … Continue reading

PMS and Marriage

Have you ever noticed that at a certain time of the month, your husband just starts doing everything he can to annoy you? He talks weird and he walks weird and he smells funny, and he leaves his socks on the floor and he doesn’t check the mail, and you can tell him something six times, and he doesn’t get it, and you just want to grab him by the neck and shake him? And then he looks at you and says, “Is it that time of the month?” which only makes you want to shake him more, because he’s … Continue reading

Natural Induction (For Full-Term Babies Only)

My last few weeks of pregnancy were really uncomfortable, so naturally I looked into ways to go into labor sooner. I tried everything, except for Castor oil. (As eager as I was to have a baby, I was not willing to spend the whole day in the ladies’ room.) Before I list off your options for giving your baby a notice of evacuation, know that none of these worked for me. The only thing that finally got labor rolling was Pitocin. But, some women insist these work, so maybe they work for some women and not others. Walking/Stairs The theory … Continue reading

Complimentary Therapies for Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the lining of the uterus, which is typically shed during menstruation grows outside the uterus. In most cases, it is found on the reproductive organs including the outside of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Endometriosis gets worse with each passing menstrual cycle and is a cause of infertility. Most doctors recommend a combination of surgery and hormonal therapy to remove and shrink the endometriosis. There are some complementary therapies that some women and practitioners swear by. While there is not a large body of scientific evidence to show they work, it can’t hurt … Continue reading

When Contractions Start and Stop

The last days of pregnancy are often spent thinking about labor and wondering when it will begin. The wait is never easy, but becomes incredibly frustrating when you have contractions that start and stop. This happened to me in two of my four pregnancies. I’d get contractions that were coming as close as five mintues apart. Over the next hour or two, the pains would come gradually further apart and then dissipate altogether. There were a few nights when I went to bed certain I’d wake up in strong labor, only to wake up pain free the next morning. This … Continue reading
