Fibromyalgia: Symptomsby Aimee Amodio | More from this Blogger 09 Nov 2007 09:19 PM Pain is the main symptom of fibromyalgia, but the condition comes with many other symptoms. Women typically feel muscle pain throughout the body or at certain points; men with fibromyalgia often feel pain in the face and at points around the body. The pain can rage from mild to severe. Severe pain can limit work, social activities, and everyday tasks. It may feel like a burning, gnawing, throbbing, stabbing, or aching sensation. The onset of pain may be gradual, and the pain may be worst when a person is trying to relax. The pain may seem less intense during activity. Another major symptom of fibromyalgia is the presence of tender points around the body. These are muscles and tendons that are tender to the touch. They are typically found in the neck, back, knees, shoulders, elbows, and hips. The American Academy of Rheumatology suggests a minimum of between eleven and eighteen tender points to make a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Some health professionals do diagnose fibromyalgia in patients with fewer tender points. Other symptoms may include:
The symptoms may become more intense during the morning, late afternoon, and evening. The daytime hours between eleven and three tend to be the best time for many people with fibromyalgia. Activity, weather changes, emotional state, and other factors can also influence symptoms. Learn more about Aimee Amodio ![]() Aimee is a fiction writer... dog lover... music lover... It feels very irritating when someone rubs their hand - say over my neck or shoulders. It is very tender! I also have places that have a "dead" sensation, like on the back of my upper arms, when I touch my skin it feels almost like fake skin or like I am touching something else other than me. I have had 2 cervical fusions, 1 lumbar discectomy and 2 lumber fusions due to a car accident. I have had Fibromyalgia since my early 20's but since my accident in April 2002 it has become unbearable! I have permanent nerve damage, and it seems that my nerve pain and fibromyalgia pain trigger each other -- I'm guessing - half the time I am not sure which it is that is causing my pain increase. Is anyone else experiencing the same kind of problems?? please contact me if so, I would love to talk about it with someone who knows what I am going through. Thanks, Susie Pedersen Aimee Amodio |
