Stomach Virus Spread at Disney’s Wild Africa Trek

The provided snack In the past couple of years the spate of food poisoning cases on cruise ships put a big “health alert” smirch on the often laid-back and envied vacation. This year, however, Disney World might be taking that dubious crown. At least, the Wild Africa Trek at the Animal Kingdom could. NBC News reports that several dozen people became sick at the beginning of June, and the primary link between them was that they’d all gone on the Wild Africa Trek right around the same time. The safari-style tour, that takes guests to parts of the park usually … Continue reading

How to Feed Pills to Pets

Let’s continue with the recent theme I’ve had of posting, in between stories about my new cat Chrestomanci, articles about pet health and how to manage it. I’ll start today’s topic with a story. One summer when I was a teenager my cat Boots contracted food poisoning. We took him to the vet, who gave us some pills for him. We had problems feeding him the pills. None of us had any experience doing so, and though we got those capsules into his mouth all right, he was a master at making us think he’d ingested them and then spitting … Continue reading

In Sickness and in Health

I’ve had food poisoning this week. If there’s anything in this world I hate, it’s food poisoning. I’ve finally crawled out of my dark cave, but I’m still weak and miserable, and my husband has taken over the house and the kids. It puts me in mind of the traditional wedding vow, “in sickness and in health.” Even if those exact words weren’t spoken at your wedding ceremony, the pledge is implied. As husbands and wives, we promise to be there for each other in each of life’s trials, and very often, those trials include those we suffer with our … Continue reading

Have A Healthy Picnic

I love picnics. The fresh air, the sunshine… but you have to be really careful with your food. And I don’t just mean protecting your meal from scavenging ants and dive-bombing birds. I mean temperature and bacteria. According to the American Dietetic Association, the amount of bacteria in food kept between 60 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit can double within an hour. So how do you keep your picnic feast safe? Try these healthy tips. Store your food at temperatures of forty degrees or less. Don’t have a ton of extra space in your cooler? Frozen water bottles serve double duty … Continue reading
