Help Your Bones Heal

Healing a broken bone doesn’t have to be just a waiting game — put on the cast and sit back to wait. There are some things you can do to help a bone heal after an injury. If you’re a smoker — STOP. Patients who smoke take a longer time to heal (on average) than those who do not. Smokers are also at higher risk of developing a nonunion — a bone that doesn’t heal correctly. Why? Smoking can alter the blood flow to your bones, depriving a healing area of necessary nutrients. Eat a healthy, balanced diet. Your body … Continue reading

First Aid: Broken Bone

I’ve got lots of weird and funny broken bone stories — usually fingers and toes. I broke a toe in gym class playing soccer when I missed the ball and kicked a classmate instead. I broke a finger when a friend threw a brick at me. Nearly seven million Americans see an orthopedic specialist for a broken bone each year. I saw one for one of my broken fingers… but used the plain old emergency room or family doctor for the others. The average citizen can expect to suffer two broken bones over a lifetime. I guess that makes me … Continue reading

An Interview with Art4Milkbones

Interesting names tend to catch my attention. So when I saw an Etsy shop called Art4Milkbones, I had to investigate! Owner and dog lover Elizabeth from Art4Milkbones was gracious enough to answer a few questions for me. Aimee: How did your business get started? What inspired you? Elizabeth: I found Etsy thru another site and really liked what I saw. I didn’t see a lot of dog themed items there at the time & decided to give my little woodcut pups a try. One thing led to another & I was hooked. My love for my dogs inspires me as … Continue reading

Pet First Aid: Pressure Points

Bleeding can often look more serious than it really is. Many wounds will start to clot within ninety seconds, with a scab forming within hours. That first rush of blood from a wound helps clean out debris and bacteria! But deep wounds — especially ones that damage veins, nerves, and arteries — can be very serious. An injured vein will bleed dark red blood evenly. An injured artery will spurt bright red blood with each heartbeat. Artery damage is more serious than vein damage, though both can be life threatening. There are a few places where arteries are relatively close … Continue reading

Pet First Aid: Fractures

Do you know how many bones are in a dog’s body? In a cat’s body? Dogs have around 319 bones; cats have around 244. Any of the bones in an animal’s body can be broken, and it usually happens as a result of some kind of trauma — like a car accident or a fall. If your pet breaks a bone, he or she may have other serious injuries too. Watch for signs of pain to clue you in to where the break is. Your pet may favor a leg, have difficulty breathing, or refuse to get up. There are … Continue reading

Pet First Aid: Car Accidents

Car accidents don’t have to be fatal. You may have heard of or seen a dog or cat who walked away from a car accident, thanks no doubt to their amazing flexibility and protective layers of fur. However, just because an animal CAN walk away from an accident doesn’t mean it is uninjured. Internal injuries may take days to show up. Here’s what you should do if your pet is hit by a car: Muzzle them if they are not having trouble breathing. An injured dog or cat may bite the first person who tries to help them. You can … Continue reading

Preparing for Pet Emergencies

When I prepared my house for Hurricane Irene last year I gathered all of the essential supplies. I had a plan for how to evacuate with my pets in case it was necessary, although I really didn’t think the flooding would get that bad in my area. Still, I was prepared. Another thing I did while I still had my power and access to the Internet was to make sure that I had the local emergency veterinary services number written down. We all know what number to dial when we have a human medical emergency, but do we have that … Continue reading

What Kinds of Insurance Do New Graduates Need?

Young adults who have just graduated from college are transitioning from being a student, to joining the rest of the adults in “the real world”. One of the first things new graduates need to do is make sure that they are properly covered by certain kinds of insurance. Yes, insurance premiums can be pricey, but life can get a lot more expensive for those who have no protection from insurance. Where are you going to be living? If you are renting an apartment, then you are going to need renters insurance. This type of insurance policy is designed to replace … Continue reading

Middle School Can Be Brutal

Middle school can be just brutal. And the funny thing is I always thought it was worse for girls. But my daughter is about to officially end her middle school years in just a couple of weeks. Although it hasn’t been problem-free, it has certainly been much better for her than it has been for my boys. I tend to think it is the fact she stayed in a K-8 school, while my boys went to middle schools. I could be wrong but all I know is that I will be glad when the next two years are over with. … Continue reading
