The Dog Park Conundrum

Having a local dog park is the dream of every dog owner. It’s a municipally-maintained safely-enclosed spot to take your dog where it can run around to its heart’s content and receive plenty of interaction with other dogs. Today I want to ask: do you take your dog to dog parks? To start off, I’ll share my experience with them. Our initial trips to the dog park ended up being unexciting. I first went in the middle of the day during the week, and so no one was there. Still, I thought this could be a good experience for Chihiro: … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction is not just all about sex or the lack of it. Florida Toddler Shoots Self

Many years ago my dad gave my mom a shooting lesson at a nearby firing range. My mom enjoyed the lesson. Because Mom’s lesson went so well, Dad gave a lesson to each of his three daughters. I told my dad outright that I wasn’t going to take the lesson. I gave my gift certificate to Mom. I am not anti-gun. I want everyone who wants to arm himself to be able to do so. However, I’m completely against owning a gun. I have proven unable to hold scissors or knives without ending up bleeding. I most always burn myself … Continue reading

Selenium and Health Issues

Selenium is a trace mineral — a mineral your body needs in small amounts as compared to macrominerals (like iron and calcium) that your body needs in large amounts. But even a trace mineral can have a big impact on your health. Selenium deficiency is often seen in places where concentrations of selenium in the soil are low — like China, and parts of Russia. Studies have shown that selenium deficiency may contribute to a host of health issues, including heart disease, thyroid issues, and a weakened immune system. Researchers believe that a selenium deficiency doesn’t usually cause illness by … Continue reading

Coenzyme Q10: Overview

You may also know it as CoQ10, vitamin Q10, or Ubiquinone… but by any name, coenzyme Q10 may have a big role to play in fighting cancer. First things first: what’s the difference between an enzyme and a coenzyme? An enzyme is a protein that helps increase the rate of natural chemical reactions in the body. A coenzyme is a compound that helps an enzyme do its job. As far as I know, the coenzyme that gets the most press is coenzyme Q10. This is a compound made by the body for a variety of reasons: to make energy needed … Continue reading

Medical Bills and Bankruptcies

A recent study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation took a look at the connection between medical bills and bankruptcies in the United States. The results at a glance: More than 62 percent of bankruptcies in 2007 were related to medical bills. This is an increase of approximately fifty percent since 2001. More than three-quarters of families who declared bankruptcy due to medical bills DID HAVE health insurance but were still overwhelmed by medical debt. More than ninety percent of people with medical debt owed more than five thousand dollars. In many cases, the amount of medical debt was … Continue reading

Checking in with Your Pulse

Do you check your pulse? It’s not something I do very often… but it may actually be a useful way to keep an eye out for heart disease! Your pulse is your heart rate — how many times your heart beats in a minute. Everyone’s heart rate is different, but the average pulse at rest for children (between six and fifteen) is 70-100 beats per minute. The average pulse for adults (ages eighteen and up) is 60-100 beats per minute. (Information provided by the Cleveland Clinic.) When you exercise, your pulse increases — this is so your body can provide … Continue reading

Family Meal Time Benefits

Eating a meal together at the table with your spouse and children, sounds like such a simple thing doesn’t it? But it can have lasting effects. Family meals are more important than we realize. According to research, teenagers of families that eat together at the table are less likely to get into trouble, less likely to take drugs and to suffer depression. Sitting down and eating together is a relaxing and sociable time. It is a time for husband and wife to share their day and talk about it, as well as let the children share what’s been happening. It … Continue reading

Four Months without a Heart

A fourteen year old South Carolina girl survived for more than one hundred days without a heart in her chest. Since July 2008, D’Zhana Simmons had two heart transplants — and survived with artificial heart pumps instead of a heart between the two surgeries. That’s a total of one hundred and eighteen days without an actual heart in her chest. When the Simmons family found out that D’Zhana had an enlarged heart that was too weak to pump blood properly, they traveled to Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami for a transplant. The heart she received in July 2008 didn’t work … Continue reading
