Caretakers and the Flu

Who is the caretaker in your family when somebody gets sick? When I was growing up, taking care of sick kids was my mom’s job (although she did share the duties with both of my grandmothers on occasion). With the double flu whammy this winter, you may find your family needing a caretaker. It’s all too easy for the flu (or another illness) to hop from one member of a household to another! Here are some tips to help keep the flu in check if somebody in your family gets sick. First and foremost, try to keep the sick person … Continue reading

With all the talk about swine flu in the news lately, you may have heard mention of a “flu kit” — basically, a bunch of stuff to keep handy in case you come down with some form of influenza. Good Reasons to Use Cloth Diapers

There was a time when the only option mothers had was to use cloth diapers. Today, parents can pickup packages of plastic, disposable, diapers from any grocery store. Not all parents are doing that, however. It appears that cloth diapers are making a comeback. There are plenty of good reasons to use cloth diapers. According to Vogue, cloth diapers are becoming trendy, especially for parents who are part of the Millennial generation. Every year, 23andMe releases a list of their top ten genetic findings. Many of these findings are of interest to genealogists. 23andMe has a blog that it calls “The Spittoon”. It is a rather amusing, and appropriate name. This company sells DNA testing kits to consumers. Those who purchase a kit provide a saliva sample to 23andMe. To do this, a person basically has to spit into the sample collection device. Therefore, “spittoon” is an … Continue reading

Sick Kit Tricks

With the colder weather here (snow in October!) and a few viruses already under our belt, it is definitely time to check and supply the sick kit. The sick kit comes in handy when anyone is sick, including mom. Maybe I should say especially mom, since when I am sick I tend not to get rest, and this draws out the illness more; can I get an Amen? While I don’t often store the entire kit together in one place, I do make sure that everything needed is stocked in easy locations. Standard kits might include tissues, medication, etc., but … Continue reading

Jack Frost Is Nipping At My Nose

It’s cold and I do not like it one bit. I’m a warm weather kind of person so this time of year makes me want to curl up in my blanket and hide until Spring. Since that’s not always possible the least I can do is make my home as warm and cozy as possible, without increasing my electric bill. It’s time to break out the plastic for the windows. This is not my favorite thing to do because we always get a few beautiful, warm days when I would love to throw open the windows to air out the … Continue reading

Study Finds Home Genetic Tests to be Flawed

Earlier this year, the FDA was considering creating regulations for over the counter DNA testing kits. This is in response to questions about the accuracy of these types of genetic tests. A new study done by Dutch researchers found many of these types of tests to be flawed and inaccurate. Genealogy is the study of one’s family. Many genealogists desire to take their research to the genetic level. The over the counter DNA testing kits can be appealing because of the information they can provide. Most of these genetic testing kits will give a person information about the health issues … Continue reading

Are You About To Ovulate?

When you’re trying to get pregnant, timing is everything. Trying to “catch the egg” is kind of like playing that penny pusher game at the carnival (you know, the one where you have put push coins through the slot to land on the conveyor in just the right spot to push a prize off the edge the next time the bar slides forward?). It’s easy to miss ovulation. You may not even get pregnant if you nail it, either. Sometimes, trying to get pregnant month after month feels like you are wasting your coins. Statistically speaking, you have about a … Continue reading

What the Physical For Life Insurance Consists Of

This week, my husband and I each had the physical exam that is required in order for us to get life insurance. This is the last step in the long process that one must go through in order to be approved for a life insurance policy. Soon, we should hear something from the insurance company that informs us if we have been accepted, or rejected, for life insurance policies. We had a woman from the insurance company come to our home to do the exams. Her name was Marla. She said that sometimes she goes to people’s workplaces instead. It … Continue reading
