Spring Beauty Tips: Hands and Nails

Spring is the season of rebirth… of rejuvenation. Don’t forget your hands! Over the winter, your skin may have gotten rough and dry thanks to forced-air heat. It’s time to renew your hands and nails. Want a good idea of someone’s age? Look at their hands. Hands are often a truer judge of age than any other part of the body. You can keep your hands looking healthy and young with these tips: Keep moisturizer handy — all year round. Apply lotion after you wash your hands to help lock in moisture. Pick a hand cream that includes sunscreen. A … Continue reading

Health Treatments For Weathered Hands

Have you ever seen someone who has elected to turn back the hands of time by undergoing a facelift? Or, perhaps you know someone who is a regular user of botox. People can nip and tuck their faces all they want to combat time, but ultimately, I find in most cases their hands still give their age away. Personally, in winter my dry and wrinkled hands look like they belong to someone twice my age. Enter the “Handspa.” You may have heard or even seen the product featured on television. It looks like a nail dryer, and in my opinion, … Continue reading

My Mother’s Hand Came Out Of My Sleeve

This year I’ll turn 45. That doesn’t worry me since I’m far healthier than anyone in my family was at my age. My great grandmother died at 73, my grandmother at 63, and my mother at 53. Since I made it past 43, I feel I’ve broken the family curse of each woman dying a decade earlier than the one before. Through exercise, stress reduction, staying busy, and eating as healthy as I can, as often as I can, I have hopes to live longer and look younger than anyone in my family ever has. I’ve been mildly OCD about … Continue reading

Super Hand Softeners

I’ve started to notice one little downside to my new part-time job at the cat boarding facility: my hands are starting to show some serious wear and tear. All the cleaning (and cleaning supplies) is leaving my skin rough and dry. I’m going through lotion like it’s going out of style! It may be time for some super hand softeners. Heat is a great way to soothe and rejuvenate skin. Heat helps make your skin more porous, so the skin treatments can be absorbed faster. There are paraffin dips available in spa versions and home versions. Up until now, I … Continue reading

A Warning About Natural Skincare Products

I have extremely sensitive skin. Unfortunately, my daughter also inherited the condition and was diagnosed with eczema as an infant. As such, I have spent a great deal of money on “natural” skincare products for both of us. When my daughter was first diagnosed with eczema her doctor recommended Eucerin. So I went out and dropped nearly 20 bucks for 10 ounces of the cream. It worked for about two weeks. I then tried a litany of other “Purely Organic” and “All Natural” products. I even considered slathering Crisco on her skin as recommended by another doctor whose children suffered … Continue reading

Combating The Signs Of Aging

We recently spent an enjoyable Easter with a boatload of family members… and I have the pictures to prove it. Yesterday, I had several rolls of film developed, and while most of the shots are wonderful (mainly the ones with my daughter and nephew) others (any of the ones I am in) leave less to be desired. I am not a fan of botox, nor do I have the time or money to indulge in fancy peels or facials… and frankly, you can tell. The signs of aging on my face are MORE than apparent. After looking at the Easter … Continue reading

How You Can Star In A Commercial For Dove

Have you ever dreamed of starring in a commercial for your favorite beauty product. No, I’m not talking about Calgon (although I’m sure many of us stay-or-work-at-home-moms have starred in our own versions of that famous commercial… on a weekly basis). I’m talking about a once in a lifetime opportunity to create your own ad for the makers of Dove beauty products. You’ll recall that the company made headlines a couple of years ago when it began using “real women” (no professional models or actors) in a line of ads promoting their products. The company is now known for “embracing … Continue reading
