“No Candy Halloween” Safer for Kids With Food Allergies

Halloween is supposed to be scary, but it isn’t supposed to be deadly. Kids who have food allergies are at risk of encountering an allergen in Halloween candy or in the treats at school parties. There is a trend this year to have a “No Candy Halloween” specifically to keep kids with food allergies safe. Food allergies are to be taken seriously. Kids that encounter even a tiny amount of a food that they are allergic to can have an allergic reaction that could consist of anything from hives, to digestion issues, to anaphylaxis. This makes Halloween candy very scary, … Continue reading

Pediatric Food Allergies on the Increase

When I was a kid, I don’t remember anyone I knew having a food allergy. Maybe it was just that I was a kid and not paying attention, but studies are showing that childhood allergies are on the rise. In the 10 years between 1997 and 2007, food allergies were up approximately 18 percent. In 2007 alone, 3 million children reportedly suffered from a food or digestive allergy to such items as nuts, wheat, eggs, or milk. Dr. Susan Rudders and her research team studied emergency room visits due to allergic reactions at Children’s Hospital Boston from 2001 until 2006. … Continue reading

Food and Allergies- A Solution

For years we’ve been hearing the benefits of honey. When I was a child, my mother used honey and lemon juice for sore throats. Honey for many people is a great addition to a recipe and can be substituted for sugar. But some of us are allergic to honey. In my case it causes tinnitus. Sounds bizarre but I have proved it over time to be true. Tinnitus is that constant ringing noise in your ears. In my case it sounded like I had a steam train in my head. It gets worse when it is quiet and makes it … Continue reading

Sweet and Scary

My daughter’s school Halloween party is less than 48 hours away. That doesn’t leave me with much time to whip up nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, organic cupcakes for the kiddos. I’m kidding. Kind of. Sort of. Not really. While there is a strict all-school policy in place regarding the type of treats you can bring into the classroom (regardless of whether or not any of the kids are allergic to a certain food), my daughter’s teacher found a loophole, which allows kids to devour sweets on Halloween, without having to endure detention. She’s orchestrating a sweet swap. Kids will bring … Continue reading
