Family Fun Tips: Face Painting Ideas

At my nephew’s birthday party yesterday, we went to a great little place in Frisco called GhattiTown – it’s a lot like Chuckie Cheese – only not. They had a face painter there who provided some great entertainment for the children with elaborate face paints from cat faces to robots to butterflies and more. The face painter even had a picture of the multiple eyes seen on Captain Jack Sparrow in the recent Pirates of the Carribean sequel. It was creepy on him in the movie and even creepier on the child in the photograph. Face painting is a lot … Continue reading

Emergency Kit

Every time I walk into my basement I feel a little guilty. I live in Utah, pretty much the preparedness capital of America and I am unprepared. I think part of that is that I don’t know what I’m preparing for and the second thing holding me back is that I tend to overwhelm myself. If three days of food is good a month would be better. No, wait! I better get a year! So I overwhelm myself with the sheer volume of stuff I think I need to keep my family safe. Then I worry about us being in … Continue reading

Beneath Your Eyes

I was watching The Colbert Report the other day, and caught a segment on an FDA-approved mini-laser that is designed to treat wrinkles around the eyes at home. I’m not so sure I like the idea of trying to use a laser anywhere on my own face… let alone around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is very delicate — some say the most fragile skin on the entire body. Lots of things can contribute to wrinkles, dark circles, and other damage to the skin beneath your eyes: Sun exposure. UV rays are a major contributor to the development … Continue reading

The Healing Powers of Clay

Yesterday I wrote about how problems with uneven skin tone sent me in search of remedies, one of which was clay-based face masks. That’s how I stumbled upon Kanwa Minerals, which not only sells clay face masks, but promotes clay as a cure for all sorts of maladies. The Clay Cure On their site they have a tab called “The Clay Cure,” but in my recent purchase they also included literature of the same title by Ran Knishinsky. Apparently clay can do more than replenish minerals in the skin. It can be ingested to replenish minerals internally too. It can … Continue reading

Help for Uneven Skin Tone

A few years ago I started noticing my skin didn’t look quite right. I developed these splotchy dark areas on my cheeks, my upper lip, and on my forehead. Maybe dark isn’t the right word. Discolored is a better one. A neighbor of mine in our current neighborhood here in Nashville told me she’d had the same trouble in her 30s. (Which I am. She’s 50.) She told me hers was due to hormones and the sun. (Which I suspect so is mine. When we lived in Florida I spent a ton of time outdoors. Also, I notice around that … Continue reading

Prevent Fine Lines and Dark Spots

It’s funny how your skin can be delicate and tough at the same time. Your skin plays a big role in body defense — skin keeps out a huge amount of dirt and bacteria and protects you against scrapes, scratches, and punctures. But for all your skin’s toughness, it can be so easy to end up with fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots, especially on your face. Here are some tips to help prevent fine lines and dark spots: Always wear sunscreen! Choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for best sun protection. Overexposure to the sun can leave … Continue reading

What Is Ataxia?

Ataxia is a loss of muscle coordination; there are several different types. Friedreich ataxia is a genetic condition that damages nerve tissue, resulting in a loss of coordination that worsens over time. Strength is also lost, as is sensation in the arms and legs. Limbs may be stiff, speech may be impaired, and heart function may be affected. In many cases of Friedreich ataxia, symptoms first appear in childhood or the early teenage years. A person may exhibit poor balance when walking or slurred speech. Approximately one quarter of all cases appear after age twenty-five and are classified as late … Continue reading

How to Pluck Your Eyebrows

Just the phrase — “plucking your eyebrows” — makes some people cringe. But it doesn’t have to be painful self torture. Really! Wash your face with warm water. You don’t have to scrub or wash roughly, just a gentle wash will do. Pat your face dry. Put some lotion on your forehead and eyebrows to help keep the skin soft. Check the direction of hair growth. Generally, the eyebrow hair grows outward from the nose to the hairline. You can use eyeliner or an eyebrow pencil to mark out where you want to pluck and where you want to leave … Continue reading
