Eating Out: More Trick Than Treat

Eating out is a big treat for most families.  Parents love the break from cooking and doing the dishes, while kids enjoy eating chicken nuggets in a different setting.  Unfortunately, splurging on a restaurant meal may come back to bite you. According to a new study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), parents are doing their children a disservice by treating them to dinner out.  Researchers say menu options offered to children by most U.S. restaurant chains have way too many calories, in addition to dangerously high amounts of salt and fat.  In fact, the group … Continue reading

What Foods Are Really Good For You

As a mom I try to make sure my daughter eats healthy foods. When I was married I cooked a big dinner every night, I’m not a great cook but no one died. When I got divorced those marathon cooking sessions after working all day went right out the window, but I still tried to make sure they were healthy foods in the house. Now, I think I may have been doing it all wrong. I just read an article that said beer makes you a better problem solver, whiskey boosts good cholesterol and pork fat is good for you. … Continue reading

Eating Habits

You know the old saying, “You are what you eat.” But I also think it could be said that our children are what we eat. In other words, our eating habits are transferred down to them. I was recently reading an article about the “10 Bad Eating Habits Parents Often Teach their Kids” and came to a realization about something. I have gotten slack in this department. When they were younger, I had a lot more control over what they ate. I leaned toward healthier choices and because that was what I purchased, it was what I ate as well. … Continue reading

Lighting Your Aquarium

Aquarium enthusiasts know just how important lighting is in a tank, both for aesthetic reasons and for the health of the organisms found therein. But this article isn’t for them, it’s for people considering a fish tank habitat, and who need to know everything to consider when putting one together. Months ago I did a general overview on how to choose an aquarium, but today I’ll focus on a more specific aspect: the lighting. I’m going to limit my article today to lighting considerations for fish aquariums. Reptiles and amphibians usually need very specific types of light and that’s something … Continue reading

FDA Warns: Black Licorice Can Harm Your Heart

If you will be dipping into the Halloween candy this year, you might want to skip the black licorice. The FDA has issued a new warning that says that black licorice can harm your heart. In fact, several other studies conclude that it can harm even more than that. First, let us note that the warning concerns adults (although, I imagine parents will want to take heed as well) who consume at least two ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks. While most of us want a little variety in our candy, there are no doubt … Continue reading

Making Healthy Living Your Lifestyle

Healthy living for some people comes naturally. For others it takes effort, time and some adjustments to their lifestyle. First take a look at your lifestyle. What are you eating? What are you doing in your spare time? How much exercise do you get each week? How many hours of sleep a night do you get? After taking a look at where you are at, pick one or two things to work on. It could even be a small change in what you drink or eat. For example, if you are an excessive coffee or soda drinker, scaling down to … Continue reading

Your Genes Could Be The Reason That You Crave Sugar

If you have ever experienced an intense and unstoppable craving for a food, then you have experienced the workings of the genetics of addiction. The three most commonly craved types of foods are sweet foods, salty foods, and fatty foods. Research has shown that people who have very strong food cravings and have trouble sticking with a diet often exhibit many of the same symptoms of people that suffer from addiction to drugs or alcohol. Some of the diagnostic criteria for substance addiction include persistent desire, repeated unsuccessful attempts to “quit”, continued use despite knowledge of adverse effects, and withdrawal … Continue reading

Tips for Healthy Eating While Pregnant

Half the battle of eating healthy while you are expecting is figuring out what to buy and what to cook. Many of us are all too familiar with the interior of the grocery store: skillet meals, frozen dinners, boxed meals, canned lunch, cereal, pasta mixes and other prepackaged foods make up a large part of our American diet. We may take a detour through the produce section for onions or a head of iceberg lettuce, but most of us wouldn’t know where to begin if we were restricted to the perimeter of the store; and yet that is where healthy … Continue reading
