Good Intentions

Have you ever had a plan to be nice to your kids completely backfire? That’s been the story of my life this morning. My baby came down with a nasty cold a few days ago, and she’s been pretty miserable. I’ve been doing whatever I can to make her more comfortable: I give her lots of warm baths, run the humidifier, scratch her back, and do lots of baby massage. She normally sleeps in her crib. She always napped with me as a newborn, but once she hit about 6 months old, she made the transfer to mostly napping alone. … Continue reading

Goodbye, Favorite Shoes! Hello… Happy Feet?

I put my favorite pair of sneakers in the trash today. Now I’m sad. They were New Balance slip-on sneakers — no laces to tie when I was running late, just slip my feet in and keep moving. Perfect for wearing to my part time job at the cats-only boarding facility, because they were so easy to put on and take off (we change into scrubs when we get to work and change back when the shift is over — another place where not having to tie shoes is SO handy). But after more than a year of being my … Continue reading

Finger Lickin’ Good Times on the Road

May is National BBQ Month and to celebrate I would love nothing more than to make a lifelong dream of mine come true. Regular readers of this blog know that I have fantasized of crisscrossing the country in search of the nation’s best ribs. But with gas prices nearing record highs it looks like my dream trip will be put on the back burner for at least another year. However, if you have the time, money and appetite there’s no stopping you from heading out to some of the country’s biggest cookouts. I’m not just talking about any ol’ barbeque; … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review June 9 – June 15

It’s been a long week here, my daughter got over a bad bout with a fever last week and I’ve spent most of the week trying not to come down with it myself. Unfortunately, I haven’t been very successful. Let’s take a good look at the week in review before I take a day of ease on Saturday. Saturday, June 9 Hot summer days are not always conducive to outdoor exercise. When temperatures cruise upwards of 95 degrees, it may be time to investigate Indoor Workouts. Sunday, June 10 Does School-Based Fitness Fade Over the Summer? There is some speculation … Continue reading

Why Should You Treat Yourself to a Massage?

We’re counting it down towards the end of the school year and Mother’s Day. For the former, it’s just 2 weeks from today and my daughter graduates kindergarten. For the latter, we have just three days left and if you haven’t already figured out what you’re doing for Mom or for yourself for this Mother’s Day – let me offer you a suggestion: treat yourself or your mom to a massage. Massage A massage may not be for everyone and I’ve known plenty of people who are uncomfortable with the idea of a body massage. There are many types of … Continue reading

Have You Found a Good Man?

A woman has got to love a bad man once or twice in her life to be thankful for a good one. — Mae West Do you have a good man or a bad man? Hopefully you share your life with a good man. I found this quote to be so true. In my first marriage I struggled to get my husband to share his weekend and/or free time with me, was always trying to get him to communicate with me and generally felt there was a serious lack of interest and over all respect. I always knew that I … Continue reading

Budgeting: Do I Have to Give up my Fun?

Budgeting means giving up fun? Not. Just because I’m budgeting now doesn’t mean I’ve given up my gourmet coffee, spa days, and pedicures. It just means I have to plan for them a little better now. By planning I don’t mean that I call the day spa on the phone and schedule a week ahead. By planning I mean budgeting the money – and saving for it when necessary. I’m lucky that my Hubby understands that I need to have massages, a crochet addiction, and pedicures occasionally. It is true: I need these things. I crochet as it feeds my … Continue reading

The Health Benefits of Massage

We’ve known for ages that massages feel good, and it is also a well-known fact that massage therapy can help those of us suffering from tension and stress related ailments. New studies have found though, that our babies will benefit from massages as well! Apparently massage may help small children and infants relax, sleep better and as a result cry less. Babies that are massaged regularly show lower levels of stress-related hormones in their urine compared to babies who are not massaged. This also calls up for another important consideration: infants benefit from a stable environment in which stress is … Continue reading
