Balancing Blogging and Mothering

I squinted to make sense of scattered letters through the glare on my screen.  Focused attempts at deciphering HTML became distracted by bursts of giggling from the other side of my window.  Rejoicing from finally making a text box that scrolled, I missed a small excited voice asking me to “look at me”.  Dripping hair and sopping wet footsteps ran inside to beckon me to join their mini water park complete with a blow up monkey pool.  Promising just five more minutes I shooed away wet fingers from my computer.  Next I looked up and the time for sprinklers, popsicles, and water slides … Continue reading

My Little Turkey

That’s my little turkey during her second Thanksgiving meal. Her first Turkey Day celebration is a blur. She was pull-your-hair-out colicky and too young for solids. However, I’m positive she got at least a hint of spice while she was nursing, given how much pumpkin pie I scarfed down that day… and the next day… and the next day. I love pumpkin pie. But not as much as I love my little turkey. Only, she’s not so little any more. Now, she’s a big turkey, and she’s got the mouth to prove it. When she was a little, she’d wobble … Continue reading

Girl vs. Monster: Disney’s Answer to Buffy?

As I was poking around on the refurbished Disney.com site (it’s very pretty and well-organized now, I’ll have to do an overview of it later) I noticed something called “Girl vs. Monster.” Immediately my hackles rose. I know I should give Disney the benefit of the doubt, but I guess I was just jumpy after the premiere of “Once Upon A Time,” where Belle stays with Rumple again to “change him with the power of love,” or some other terrible abusive-vibe thing like that. I’m glad I followed the link to learn more about it, though, because “Girl vs. Monster” … Continue reading

My Quest to Find Affordable Health Insurance is Finished

I recently got approved for a health insurance policy that I can afford. It has been a long, tiring, frustrating, quest to find coverage after I lost my job that came with employer sponsored health insurance. Here is a quick summary of my journey from uninsured to insured. This all started in 2009. I was working as a paraeducator in a special needs classroom. After working for the school for the required amount of time, I became eligible for their employer sponsored health insurance. I think it was Anthem Blue Cross. It covered both me and my husband. My husband … Continue reading

Finally Found Out the Price of My Premium

One of the first pieces of information that a person wants to know about their health insurance policy is how much the premiums will cost. In my experience, this is the most difficult question to get an answer to. Today, I finally got an answer to that very important question! A few years back, I lost my health insurance when I lost my job. This is a situation that a whole lot of Americans are facing. It has been a long, frustrating, journey since then as I tried to find affordable health insurance. Recently, I decided to seek out the … Continue reading

Getting Some Breast Answers and the Next Steps

Getting a late morning call to come back in to the radiology department after I had just been there for a routine mammogram was very unsettling. It took until the next day to get some answers from my doctor’s office. My doctor’s nurse called the next day, and I missed the call. I had taken my kids to the library and the park. Life goes on, right? I did feel less inclined to run around through the maze of the playground and more inclined to sit in the sun and read a book. Inevitably, though, there are one or two … Continue reading

What I Learned from My Child’s Pain

What’s worse than watching one of your children cry for three hours over a broken relationship? Finding out that the one who did the breaking of the heart suddenly realized how wrong they were and wants a second chance. As I comforted my child (before the other person realized they were “wrong” for breaking up), all I could think in the back of my mind was that this must be the best thing. Because after all, that person surely didn’t deserve my child. Of course, I didn’t tell my child that but those were my thoughts. I also thought back … Continue reading

Finally an Invitation

The kid were excited that we were going to the in laws but they were a bit nervous too which we totally get. We were nervous too especially we know how hard conversations have been and sitting together may be even harder. We need to have a hard conversation with my mother and father in law and it is coming soon. We need to know if they plan on having a relationship with our family going forward. Being told that they are too busy to see their son and his family before February is ridiculous but this is where we … Continue reading

Where’s My Water?

Playing computer games and helping others: how can the two possibly intersect? Thanks to the internet they have; several games exist online now that by playing, users can donate funds to various worthy causes. The most famous is freerice.com, a site that offers various educational games in subjects such as vocabulary, geography, literature, math, and chemistry. For every correct answer, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Program, to help feed the hungry. Now Disney’s getting in on the game. Disney Friends for Change, the company’s arm that tries to get kids involved in volunteer work, has … Continue reading
