Long Hair vs. Short Hair: the Smackdown

I’m a short hair girl. It suits my face (I think), it’s easy to care for, and looks good on short notice. I’m used to it. I’m comfortable with it. Heck, I even cut my own hair most of the time! With curly hair, if it’s a little uneven, it’s hard to tell. (Things would be a little trickier if I had straight hair.) But every once in a while, I get the urge to let my hair grow. I can count only two times in my life when my hair has been below shoulder length: once when I was … Continue reading

What’s Making My Hair Gorgeous: Fekkai or Bom Dia?

Something remarkable has happened atop my head the last couple of months: my hair looks shinier, healthier, more colorful than it has in years. (Like in over 20 years, since I was a teenager and my hair always looked healthy.) I haven’t colored it since last summer so I know it’s not that. In fact, when I first noticed this hair transformation it was around the time I should have been noticing the few grays I have and thinking about coloring again. Instead, I noticed my hair had changed color on its own. Not entirely changed, but the brown was … Continue reading

Your Hair Knows Where You’ve Been

It sounds like something from CSI or Law and Order: using a person’s hair to figure out where they’ve been. Researchers from the University of Utah have been analyzing water molecules from human hair samples — and using the information to determine where the person lived. The process isn’t always accurate, but it’s pretty close. Analyzing the makeup of water molecules determines the right region of origin around eighty-five percent of the time. This project was inspired by the 2001 anthrax attacks. Researchers wondered if microbes (like anthrax) might record the water environment that they came from. After that idea, … Continue reading

Hot Summer Hair

When the heat and humidity is high, it’s hard to work up the effort to do something creative with your hair. Here are some tips and tricks for good hair days even when the weather makes it hard. Summer Hair Care Tips: Try a leave-in conditioner if you’ll be outside most of the day (like at the beach or poolside). Work the conditioner into damp hair and let the heat of the day help it penetrate. Skip the blow-dryer — it can leave your hair frizzy. A super-absorbent towel may not get you all the way dry, but it’ll save … Continue reading

Life With Curly Hair

I used to hate my curly hair. I was so envious of friends with straight hair, even when they had perms! My hair was wild and poofy and unmanageable… and it still is. These days, I’ve learned to love my curly hair. In general, curly hair tends to dry out easily. It can be more brittle than straight hair, and can be prone to frizzing. Regardless of length, you may spend more time taking care of your curly hair than your straight haired friends spend on theirs. So how can you make your hair care routine easier? Some hair-care experts … Continue reading

Popular Baby Names From A Century Ago

Today, parents often give their newborns a name that was inspired by popular culture. This is not a new phenomena. If you take a close look at the baby names that were popular about one hundred years ago, you will find that your ancestors were also inspired by popular culture when they named their babies. Perhaps one of your ancestors was named after someone who was famous in 1910. In many ways, day to day life is very different now, than it was around one hundred years ago. Your ancestors didn’t have cell phones, access to the internet, or big … Continue reading

Conditioner Makes the Difference

I have unruly hair. It’s thick and curly and I really do like it… but it can be difficult to handle. Dealing with my hair isn’t really that bad… as long as I use conditioner on a regular basis. I have two different types I like: one is your usual in-the-shower conditioner and the other is a leave-in conditioner. The leave-in is nice because it’s like wearing “product” (gel or mousse or something) without actually using gunk in my hair. I was in a rush yesterday while getting ready for work. So, while I’d intented to use my leave-in conditioner … Continue reading

How to Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

Interested in trying a dry shampoo? You don’t have to shell out big bucks if you’ve got a well-stocked kitchen and medicine cabinet. I bet you’ve already got everything you need on hand. The quickest, simplest dry shampoo recipe I found? Take a little corn starch — yes, the stuff used in cooking to thicken sauces — and work it into your hair. Start at the roots and scalp, where hair tends to be the oiliest. Scrub it around as if you were using shampoo in the shower, then brush or comb it out. The corn starch will soak up … Continue reading

Prince Harry Preps for Trip to U.S. and “Survivor” Winner Preps for More Chemo

Prince Harry is prepping to horse around in the Big Apple this weekend. Only his plans don’t include his on-again, off-again girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Rather, the youngest son of the late Princess Diana will be hitting the polo field for a fundraising event for his Sentebale charity for African children. The polo game marks Prince Harry’s first-ever formal visit to the United States. While in America the royal spare will participate in the second annual Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic on New York’s historic Governors Island. The match will pit the 24-year-old prince against polo hottie Nacho Figueras. Despite the … Continue reading

Highlights at Home

It’s been a long time since I got the urge to dye my hair. Partially because it’s expensive and partially because I just haven’t felt the need. But today the bug hit hard and I gave in. I picked up a highlighting kit that was made “especially for curly hair”. I guess that’s because the highlighting comb that comes with the kit has extra-wide teeth? This is the first time I’ve attempted highlights, rather than an all-over color, so I’m not really sure what the little comb usually looks like. The color? Supposedly a warm coppery color, somewhere between my … Continue reading
