Hair-raising Dilemma

Thank goodness my daughter is not a girly-girl. I stink at applying make-up and I can’t style hair to save my life. Scroll down to my bio photo for proof. Fortunately, my daughter blissfully embraces her short, low-maintenance hairdo. Not only do her not-so long locks save us precious time in the morning, but they also assure that she will never be banned from her class picture because I’ve turned her tresses into an eye-popping coiffure. Sadly, the same can’t be said for Marcella Marino. The pretty 4-year-old blonde made headlines recently when school officials booted her from a class … Continue reading

They Think Life is Easier Without a Husband

Sometimes people ask too much of me. Being a single mom means that my time is already over scheduled but sometimes other people don’t see it that way. They think that because I only have one child and no husband wanting his dinner on the table after a long day at work, that I have all this free time. I hate to break it to you, but I don’t. Even without a husband, dinner has to be made. Without a husband laundry still has to be done, the house still has to be cleaned and the yard mowed. The only … Continue reading

The Long and Short of It

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of guys with long hair. I especially abhor long, shaggy bangs that make ordinary boys look like Cousin It. However, as much as I despise males with long locks, I hate cancer even more. It’s a reasonable deduction, which I assume many would agree with. Unfortunately, “many” doesn’t include administrators at a Michigan high school. Members of the Madison Academy School Board recently suspended a 17-year-old male student for sporting long hair. Never mind that the teen is a cancer survivor, who was growing out his mane because he wanted to donate it … Continue reading

When Teen Siblings Don’t Get Along

Things in my home have gotten a little out of control lately. I think it’s a combination of hormones and the typical teenage angst that has my preteen and two teens going at it. At one time it used to be that at least two of my children would be on good terms but lately all three have been on the outs. It has been very frustrating to hear one yelling at another, one telling the other to “shut up,” slamming doors in each other’s faces and protesting to me how unfair life is because of their sibling. At times … Continue reading

Life is Three Dimensional

There are subtle differences that make a big impact between images that look professional and those that fall flat. Lighting is a big factor, but a lot can hinge on how you, as the photographer, set up the shot as well. While pictures can always be easily cropped in this digital age, you can’t change the composition of an image without a lot of painting, cloning, masking and other advanced editing techniques. It can be done, but you’re not going to end up with a natural image. If anything, it’s more like digital illustration rather than photography. That is why … Continue reading

A Day In The Life Of A Pregnant Woman

1am – Wake up, search for the body pillow that fell to the floor. Spend five minutes getting comfortable. Drift back to sleep. 1:06am – Your eyes fly open. You run to the bathroom. 2:30am – Wake up to carefully roll over and adjust the pillow between your knees. 6:15am – You realize you cannot lay in bed another minute because your back is aching. Even if your back didn’t hurt, your bladder is about to explode. 6:30am – While reaching for the bag of coffee beans, you remember you kicked the caffeine habit and begrudgingly reach for the apple … Continue reading

The Busy Life of the Preschooler

Preschoolers are wonderful…think about it. They still think parents knows everything and they think we are perfect (though Grandpa is better). They still like to give kisses and the sweetest hugs for no reason (well, sometimes they do it for the cookie), and best of all they still want to cuddle. This morning, my Deanna, woke in the most loving mood; as she stumbled in the kitchen with her Dora the Explorer jammies turned sideways from the long night of sleep. She was funny to watch as she had tusseled hair–we call “bed head”–and three stuffed bunnies. She gave me … Continue reading

Easing the Fear of Haircuts

My first haircut was done by my grandfather, a barber by trade. But as I got older, I went to the beauty salon with my mom. I always enjoyed the experience — especially having someone wash my hair — but not every kid does so well in the hairdresser’s chair. There are plenty of kid-focused salons out there, where stylists and staff go out of their way to make parents and kids feel more comfortable about the hair cutting experience. Here are some tips from a local kid-focused salon here in the Portland, Oregon area. Tip number one: watch what … Continue reading

Long Hair vs. Short Hair: the Smackdown

I’m a short hair girl. It suits my face (I think), it’s easy to care for, and looks good on short notice. I’m used to it. I’m comfortable with it. Heck, I even cut my own hair most of the time! With curly hair, if it’s a little uneven, it’s hard to tell. (Things would be a little trickier if I had straight hair.) But every once in a while, I get the urge to let my hair grow. I can count only two times in my life when my hair has been below shoulder length: once when I was … Continue reading
