Two Interesting Statistics about Marriage

Haven’t all of us at times wished we could go back in time and do things over, and do them better or differently? Haven’t we all wished we could eliminate he mistakes and improve our lives? If you had it all to do over again would you marry the same person? According to Time magazine that question was asked in a survey that extended over 15 countries. The survey found that 68 percent of people surveyed said if they could do it all again, they would marry the same person. Would you be one of those like that 68 percent? … Continue reading

Exercise Boosts Your Brain at Any Age!

If you’re worried about your brain’s health, you might want to think about your physical fitness levels. A new study from the Center for Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden looked at the link between physical fitness and brain fitness (or, if you want to be technical about it, call it “cognitive function”). Researchers looked at data on more than a million Swedish men born between 1950 and 1976 who enlisted for military service at age 18. Included in those 1.2 million men were more than a quarter of a million siblings — and some … Continue reading

A Picture of a Marriage

52 years married and still in love with his wife, that was the picture actor Alan Alda presented in a recent interview with Andrew Denton. These are some of the things that impressed me in that interview with the 73 year old actor. Firstly, that he and his wife Arlene have been married 52 years. In Hollywood and the entertainment industry at large, that in itself is a major achievement. Alan Alda suggested that when looking for a life partner (and that tells you something about the way he views marriage – as a life commitment) ‘your life partner makes … Continue reading

Will Divorce Make You Happier?

You’ve decided that love is no longer in your marriage. You’re considering whether the smarter option is to split up and go your separate ways. Should you divorce? Would it make you happier? Not necessarily. That’s the findings of a summary of households and families in the US. The report was conducted using information available from the National Survey of Family and Households. Of over 5200 married men and women interviewed in the 1980s, 645 people admitted that they were unhappily married. The same men and women were interviewed again five years down the track. Some had chosen to divorce, … Continue reading

Marriage Can Make You Smarter

A study from Brigham Young University recently reported that a happy marriage could lower your blood pressure. Now neuroscience is noticing that marriage can make you smarter, too. In the early stages of a relationship (that first, exciting rush of love), your brain might not be in the right state for intellectual pursuits. A lot of the beginnings of love are driven by the euphoric feelings that come from dopamine — a brain chemical that produces powerful, pleasurable feelings. As relationships mature, dopamine levels become less important and other parts of the brain are engaged. In the later stages of … Continue reading

Do They Live To Frustrate Us?

As much as I love my teens, sometimes they can just be frustrating. They disagree just to disagree. They correct you when you are talking to other adults. They go to the other parent when the first one says no. When my kids are being disagreeable, I have to admit that sometimes I take the bait. I get angry, I snap at them, I fight the battle they have started. This does not mean that I win the war. If our kids can get us to react angrily to they win. Not that we have to win every time, but … Continue reading

Why I Hate Pull-Ups

When potty training, many parents transition from diapers straight to pull-ups (or easy-ups, no matter the brand of disposable training pants. I’m brand neutral.) believing that this is a natural way to start potty training. Well I hate the things. Here is why, in no particular order. 1. Pull-Ups are expensive Have you ever done the unit cost of a pull-up? Depending on the brand, you may be spending 50 or more per each piece. Ones with characters, wet feelings or magic pictures may cost even more. By the time that you are done potty training, you can spend a … Continue reading
