Want to treat a friend or loved one to a massage? If you can't afford a professional, you can always give the massage yourself!

Set up your space:

1. Clear a space on the floor or a rectangular kitchen table. Pick a spot that is physically comfortable for the person giving the massage -- the table may be great if you are tall enough, but you may need to use the floor if you are shorter. A table massage can be given standing, but a floor massage should be given kneeling.
2. Pad your massage space with a few blankets or a comforter covered in sheets or towels. You need the sheets or towels on top to absorb the massage oil or lotion you are using; pick something that can be thrown in the wash easily.
3. Prepare extra sheets or towels to keep your partner warm. Only expose the body part you are massaging -- if you are working on your partner's back, make sure their legs are covered for both warmth and comfort.

Tips to make your home massage even better:

1. Think of your visits to a professional massage therapist as a place to pick up new ideas. If you like something your massage therapist does, you may want to try it on your massage partner.
2. Mix up a special scent for your partner. Use unscented lotion or a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond and add a few drops of a favorite essential oil. If your massage recipient needs help relaxing, try lavender or chamomile. If your friend needs a mood boost, try a bright citrus scent.
3. Play soft instrumental music in the background. The music will help disguise distracting noises from around the house or outside.
4. Light candles or use small lamps instead of overhead lights. The soft light will be extra relaxing.
5. Both the person giving the massage and the person receiving the massage should remove all jewelry -- especially rings and bracelets in the case of the giver. The person receiving the massage should take off glasses or remove contact lenses if possible.
