My Family Tree is Full of Allergies

I am a person who suffers from severe allergies. When I take a moment to think about it, I realize that most of my relatives suffer from some form of allergies, too. My family is living proof that allergies really can run in families. My allergies are severe enough that I never know for sure what my health will be like from one day to the next. Or, from one hour to the next, for that matter. I have good days, and bad days, and today is definitely not a good allergy day. Therefore, it is difficult for me to … Continue reading

Metal Allergies

Do you have a metal allergy? If wearing earrings, bracelets, necklaces, or rings makes you itchy, you just might. Metal allergies are more frequently seen in women than in men. The most common cause of a metal allergy is nickel. Nickel is pretty pervasive — it is even found in trace amounts in soil, water, and air. It is in some detergents and makeup. Certain foods have a high nickel content, too. Whole wheat, legumes, chocolate, tea, and many canned foods have a high nickel content. Loose change doesn’t have much actual nickel content, but can cause an allergic reaction … Continue reading

Beware of Unexpected Allergy and Asthma Triggers

Halloween can be scary, and even dangerous, at times. Parents of children who have asthma, or who have skin allergies, need to be especially careful as they celebrate Halloween. Certain things that your children encounter on this holiday could hold hidden asthma and allergy triggers. Haunted houses, and spooky costumes, help people have some scary fun on Halloween. Few things can be more terrifying, though, than having to rush your child to the emergency room because he or she is having a severe asthma or allergy attack. It can be especially upsetting when you have no idea what triggered the … Continue reading

Treating Chin Acne in Pets

Don’t stress too much if your pet develops chin acne — it’s a relatively common problem in dogs and cats! One of the most common causes for chin acne is allergies. A pet may be allergic to fleas, foods, plastic in bowls, or inhaled particles like pollen and mold spores. Dealing with the allergy can make a big difference in many cases of chin acne. Treat your pet with a monthly flea/tick preventative like Frontline, Advantage, Sentinel, or Revolution. Spray your home and yard to clear up flea infestations if one is present or suspected. Eliminate plastic food and water … Continue reading

The Danger of Manganese

Pediatricians are becoming concerned about children, and in particular those under the age of 12 months, being exposed to high levels of manganese. Here is what you need to know about current studies and the effects of exposure for your child. Manganese exposure has been long known by physicians to be hazardous. It is considered a neurotoxic substance, that is, it negatively affects the nerves and the brain. Too much manganese can cause behavioral changes, memory loss and a neural condition that mimics the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. A new study done by Robert Wright, MD of Children’s Hospital Boston … Continue reading

Vaccine Fact and Fiction

Feeling hesitant about your own (or your child’s) vaccinations? Only one of the following three popular beliefs about vaccinations is true. Mercury in vaccines can accumulate in the body. The flu vaccine can actually cause the flu. People can have allergic reactions to vaccines. Do you know which one is true? It’s the third one — allergic reactions. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, out of one million vaccines given, only ONE vaccine will cause a severe allergic reaction or death. Mild allergic reactions are slightly more common. If you do experience a reaction to a vaccine, a … Continue reading

Shopping the Catalogs: More Romantic Rings

Yesterday I listed a few romantic rings that have caught my eye as I’ve been shopping the catalogs this holiday season. The list was getting a bit long, so I broke it up. Here’s the rest of my picks: From The Danbury Mint Diamond Rapture Ring: Yep, rapture’s an apt name to describe the response someone might give when receiving this ring. Royal Sapphire Ring: With a kind of a crown design to it, it certainly is royally regal. Diamond Swirl Ring: Simple, elegant, and stately. Diamond Promise Ring: Both the name and the design caught my attention. (And made … Continue reading

Shopping the Catalogs: Romantic Rings

I’m not a big jewelry wearer, but I’d like to be. (My problem is I’m not the most graceful person. I usually break or lose it. It’s amazing that, other than one bent prong, in the 12 plus years I’ve had my diamond ring I haven’t managed to destroy it yet.) However, while I’ve been shopping the catalogs for gifts to give, I’ve also been admiring some things my alter ego (the one who knows how to wear jewelry without abusing it) would like. In particular, rings. Below is a list of the ones that caught my eye and stole … Continue reading
