The Ring – A Real Life Genealogy Mystery Solved

There’s something intriguing about a genealogy mystery, especially when it happens in real life and not in a book or a movie. The particular mystery that I learned about today is even more intriguing to me because it involves a place that I have visited before, Kittery, Maine. What’s more, this real-life New England genealogy lost and found mystery was solved just a few days ago by a professional genealogist from Utah. The story began a few weeks ago when a resident of Berwick, Maine found a ring on a beach near Kittery. Fortunately, the ring had an inscription so … Continue reading

Don’t Fall For A Genealogy Myth

There are many genealogy myths out there. Many have been passed around for so long that they almost seem like truth. I don’t think these myths got started due to an intent to confuse people, or to mess up other people’s genealogy research. Instead, I think these myths exist due to a misunderstanding of a family story, or out of a desire to make your ancestors seem as though they were incredibly important people. The assumption being, of course, that if your ancestors were amazing, then you must be amazing as well. No matter what reason these myths exist, you … Continue reading

Mystery Solved!

My great grandfather was born to a single mother in 1898. She never disclosed who the father was, or if she did, it was kept secret by anyone who knew. She married a man within a few years of my great grandfather’s birth, and my great grandfather assumed his stepfather’s last name. It is unknown if he was ever officially adopted. I first became aware of my great grandfather’s illegitimate birth when I first began diving into my genealogy. There were a few theories as to who the biological father was: a traveling businessman, a married man, or even a … Continue reading

So Why All the Mystery?

I hope you’re not too fed up with hearing about my uterus. It’s a pretty big deal for me, and a pretty major surgery on the horizon… so I’ve got a lot of processing to do. One lingering question isn’t so much about the health issue itself but about the mystery surrounding it. Why was my regular doctor not willing or able to make a definitive diagnosis when another doctor — faced with the same exact report from the ultrasound — did? I’ve come up with a few possibilities. For one thing, maybe the level of expertise is part of … Continue reading

Is That My Final Answer?

Yesterday, I talked about my conversation with the doctors at the teaching clinic about my not-so-mysterious-any-more growths. I’ve got two fibroids — one inside the uterus about the size of a mandarin orange and one in the uterine lining about the size of a football. Between the two, I’ve been pretty uncomfortable over the last year or so. My periods are irregular, my cramps are incredibly painful, my bladder always feels full, I have constipation problems, and more — all thanks to the football and the orange. In the last six weeks or so, the pain has really become a … Continue reading

My Mystery, Solved!

Did you miss me? I missed you! But my computer’s breakdown came at a pretty opportune time, as it gave me a few days to focus on my health. Here’s the latest news. First, a quick recap: a pelvic exam suggested that I might have fibroids. My doctor ordered an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis, but the results weren’t quite clear. I was handed off to a teaching clinic for more testing. Or so I thought. The doctor walked into the exam room and greeted me with a cheery, “So, you’re here to talk about surgery?” After I picked my … Continue reading

Steve Fossett: The Mystery Solved?

If you remember, millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett went missing after he took off on a solo flight last September 3rd. For a month, the Civil Air Patrol searched for him and his plane, to no avail. The search was finally called off and Fossett, per the request of his wife, was declared legally dead on February 15, 2008. (This photo is in the public domain because it was created by NASA.) Still, people wondered what happened to Fossett. After all, 63 year old Fossett was an accomplished pilot, having set 93 aviation world records. Searches in the Nevada desert that … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: One Hot Hotel and the Mystery Behind Hotel Soap

ONE HOT HOTEL In a previous blog I touted the generosity of Hollywood billionaire David “DreamWorks” Geffen who recently donated his newly renovated hotel in Malibu to area residents displaced by the raging wildfires. Geffen’s posh Malibu Beach Inn hadn’t even hosted its first full house of new customers before the devastating fires erupted and the Hollywood mogul turned his property into a shelter for firefighters and evacuees. The inn’s manager told news reporters they couldn’t stomach having spare rooms available and not offering them to those in need. Fire victims are currently staying for free at the luxurious inn … Continue reading
