Pick Your Own Fun This Summer

Summer is here, and if you are looking for a fresh and fun idea for something to do with your toddler, why not visit a pick – your – own farm or orchard. The selection of fruits or vegetables that are available will, of course, depend upon where you live. Right now in Vermont, strawberries are ripe for the picking, as are some raspberries. Blueberries are almost ready too. There’s nothing like watching your toddler gleefully enjoy a bounty of berries as you try to fill a container without him eating them all. Berries are fun to find among the … Continue reading

Sunscreen Dump

Tis the season to clean out the medicine cabinet. Well, at least in my home. End of the summer sales on things like sunscreen, band-aids, and topical ointments serve as the impetus for my annual cleaning. However, this year I’m being extra careful about replacing my old sunscreens with the ones on clearance. A few weeks ago I received an email about sunscreen hazards. According to the Environmental Working Group, some sunscreens can be harmful to your health. The group maintains that the majority of sunscreens on the market shouldn’t be used on adults or children because they contain two … Continue reading

Sneaky Ways to Remember Your Sunscreen

Memorial Day has passed here in the States, and that means it’s semi-officially summer! Sure, you can count June 21st as the official start of summer if you like, but the pool’s open so it’s summer to me! (Back home at the Jersey shore, Memorial Day is also the official start of the summer tourist season, so that’s another good reason in my book.) In fact, I’m planning to spend a good chunk of the afternoon lounging by the pool with a book. That means it’s time for my annual nagging about wearing sunscreen! I’ll be the first to admit … Continue reading

Home Blog Month in Review: August

Did you have a good month? We seem to have packed an entire summer’s worth of activities in this past month. Now, it seems, it is back to school and time to get ready for autumn. Still, it is nice to look back toward warm sands and wearing shorts even as we will soon be crunching leaves and taking out the sweaters. August 1st Getting Out Grass Stains With summer in full swing, chances are that your family has been playing outdoors quite a bit. And with all of that outdoor play comes the grass stains, especially if you are … Continue reading

Sugar and Your Skin

Sugar can be good for your skin on the outside — in the form of an exfoliating sugar scrub. However, the sugar you eat may be ruining your skin! Sugar in your bloodstream can attach to protein molecules to form advanced glycation end products (or AGEs). The more sugar you eat, the more AGEs that form in your bloodstream. As these AGEs accumulate, they damage nearby proteins — think of dominoes. Knock one down, and the rest start to fall. The proteins that are most vulnerable to damage from AGEs are collagen and elastin — the protein fibers that keep … Continue reading

How To Beat The Heat On Your Summer Vacation

If you are planning to spend this last (unofficial) week of summer vacation traveling anywhere in the Midwest, Southeast or Southwest portions of the United States be prepared to deal with another round of scorching temperatures. If you thought the upcoming Labor Day weekend would bring with it relief from the recent heat wave that has been baking just about the entire country, weather forecasters say think again. Let’s face it; we can’t control the weather, but we can control how we deal with it. Take it from me; nothing spoils a family vacation faster than severe sunburn or other … Continue reading

Family Travel: Taking Your Children To A Strawberry Farm

I was going to title this blog “A Trip To The Strawberry Farm—A Parent’s Survival Guide,” but I didn’t want to send the wrong message. Yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I finished off the last two pieces of a very tasty strawberry rhubarb pie. It was a pie we made together with the fresh strawberries we picked earlier this summer at our local berry farm. (I froze a few pounds and have been adding them to recipes throughout the summer.) Nothing says summer than fresh strawberries, right? That was my thinking about two months ago when I loaded my daughter … Continue reading

Shrink Your Pores

Large pores aren’t harmful — they’re just annoying. When your pores get clogged with dead skin cells and skin oil (sebum), they start to stretch and sag. If the pores fill up with sebum, the oil can oxidize and turn dark, which makes the pores more visible. Large pores can happen just about anywhere, but you may see them in places where your skin is oilier than others; I tend to get large pores on my nose. If you don’t like the way large pores look, here are some tips to shrink them a bit. Keep your skin clean! If … Continue reading

Picking The Right Sunscreen For Your Family

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Boy, if I had a dime for each time my dermatologist has uttered those words to me I would be able to afford more trips to her office. In my previous blog I tried to provide a translation of the alphabet soup printed on the outside of sunscreen bottles. Basically, you want to look beyond the SPF numbers and choose a product that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. The good news is that a growing number of sunscreen manufacturers are paying attention and offering more “broad spectrum” products with UVA blockers. … Continue reading

Spending Time in the Sun

Warmer months are upon us and so that means many of us will be spending more time outdoors. I especially enjoy early mornings out on my deck sipping coffee and late afternoons sitting in my chair reading a good book. Of course, being outdoors means exposure to the sun. I certainly wouldn’t mind a little color but the sun can be very damaging so there are precautions that need to be taken. You can Enjoy Sunshine Without Sun Damage by following some important tips. Now that I am in my early 40’s, I am especially careful about the way I … Continue reading
