Hitting the Pool with a Toddler

I used to think watching a naked toddler run around a swimming pool was cute. Of course, that was when it was my kid baring it all and not a stranger’s tot trotting around in his birthday suit relieving himself in the same water my family’s swimming in. Due to the serious nature of wading in a pool contaminated with human stool, it’s vital your toddler be clad properly. If your toddler is not potty trained you will want to invest in swim diapers before you head to the pool.  Regular diapers may fit snugly around his thighs and waist, … Continue reading

Summer Bummer: Poo in the Pool

One of the highlights of my family’s summer has been the near daily trips we’ve taken to our neighborhood swimming pool. Given that the summer of 2012 has been the hottest on record, I can’t tell you how grateful I am to live near this watery oasis of fun, especially since I parent a fish. Of course, I’m not the only mom who has made the pool a home away from home with her kids. In fact, with the record breaking heat wave we’ve endured this summer our pool has been packed to capacity on several occasions. The swarms of … Continue reading

Mommy Blog Bashers

Have you ever considered that you could be helping a struggling single mom of four young children make ends meet each time you click on a link that leads to her blog? Earlier this year Oprah Winfrey devoted an entire show to the “Secret Lives of Moms.” It featured an audience full of women drooling at the chance to discuss the joys and pitfalls associated with raising the next generation. A portion of the episode spoke to a “new” kind of motherhood, in which women no longer suffer in silence about negative parenting experiences, mistakes and lack of maternal instincts. … Continue reading

Is Pool Chlorine Bad for You?

I don’t want to put a damper on your summer fun… but that chlorine in your pool is a pretty powerful chemical. Chlorine can be highly irritating to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract if not diluted. The upside of chlorine: this chemical helps disinfect the pool water. It helps curb algae growth and keep bacteria under control. Swimming in a contaminated pool can be dangerous to your health! The downsides of chlorine: A 2006 study found that children who are prone to asthma are at increased risk of developing the disease if they swim regularly in an indoor chlorinated … Continue reading

June was my first official month posting for the Baby Blog. It has been a great experience. I love learning new things about babies and sharing it with friends. Of course, I could use your help. Whether you are a first-time mom or an experienced mom of a large family, I want to hear from you. Please share your advice, your questions and your comments. When Parents Are the Pain

Did you hear that the Gosselin kids are staging a prison break? In a previous blog I detailed the physical pains that are inherent to parenthood. Yesterday I received a link to a hilarious take on how parents can be a real pain in the butt to their kids. Not surprisingly the post was about Kate Gosselin. The divorced mother of eight good-looking and articulate children (9-year-old twins and 6-year-old sextuplets) is back on TLC with a new show called Kate Plus 8. The latest episode aired Sunday night and has already been repeated ad nauseam. The intent of the … Continue reading

Weirdest Place Your Kid Has Gone Potty

I promise; this will be my last potty-themed blog (for a while anyway). In my previous post I shared my young daughter’s fear of going potty in public restrooms that feature automatic-flushing toilets. What I neglected to reveal in that blog is the myriad of non-traditional places that she’s gone number one, on the occasions when she absolutely wouldn’t relieve herself on “strange” potties. Let’s see… she’s gone in the tall grass that borders a rural highway in Wisconsin, in an opening between rocks at a secluded beach in Hawaii, in a dirt hole I dug in the far corner … Continue reading

Confessions of a Reluctant Facebook Parent

Within hours of posting my last blog regarding obsessed Facebook parents, I learned that not all moms and dads, who use the social networking site, do so willingly. Enter Tom*. I worked with Tom for about three years prior to becoming a stay-at-home. By the time I met him he was divorced and his teenage children were living with their mother in a neighboring state. Tom was a veteran in our business, but by no means a dinosaur. Then again, he wasn’t a spring chicken either, so I wasn’t surprised to learn that when it came to high-tech stuff, Tom … Continue reading

Why Does My Dog Roll In Things?

I remember a trip to the park one time with Lally (this was in the few months when I just had her, before we found Moose). After a fun walk with our human friend Joe and his Bassett hound Cassie, Lally decided to end the adventure by rolling in something. I don’t know what it was but it smelled AWFUL. I dragged her home (it was a long and stinky walk) and carried her into the shower with me, since the apartment didn’t have a bathtub. Lucky for me, Lally only weighs around fifty-five pounds, so I could pick her … Continue reading
