Baby Find: Sock Ons

One thing that always gets lost when it comes to babies is socks. Those cute little feet just cannot seem to keep socks on. I have had four babies and all lost half or more of their sock supply. No matter the sock, the style, the brand, those precious little feet just could not keep socks on. I would tire of hearing well meaning people say, “Oh your baby lost a sock.” I longed to raise my child in a jungle so this sock dilemma would be a thing of the past. Sadly, that was not to be our fate. … Continue reading

Dad’s Depression has an Impact on Baby

When we discuss postpartum depression, we automatically think of moms suffering from this illness. But a recent study showed that many dads may experience depression after a new baby is born. And this study also revealed that dad’s depression can have major ramification of your children. There appears to be a direct correlation between dad’s depression and spanking. The study showed that 40 percent of depressed dads have spanked their one year old child, compared to only 13 percent of dads that are not suffering. These results are alarming, as children this young most likely will not make the connection … Continue reading

Mommy Blog Bashers

Have you ever considered that you could be helping a struggling single mom of four young children make ends meet each time you click on a link that leads to her blog? Earlier this year Oprah Winfrey devoted an entire show to the “Secret Lives of Moms.” It featured an audience full of women drooling at the chance to discuss the joys and pitfalls associated with raising the next generation. A portion of the episode spoke to a “new” kind of motherhood, in which women no longer suffer in silence about negative parenting experiences, mistakes and lack of maternal instincts. … Continue reading

Stress, Weight Gain and Depression in Adoptive Parents

“At least you don’t have to deal with the ‘maternity forty’!” chirped a colleague while I waiting for my third child’s arrival from Korea. Adoptive parents frequently hear comments like, “Oh, you’re doing it the easy way”. Now, having had a difficult pregnancy myself, I’m inclined to agree that MY adoption process wasn’t as difficult as my pregnancy. But I was blessed to have had the choice both to conceive and to adopt. Remember that many adoptive parents have been dealing with the grief of infertility. They often feel that their dreams of a family are at the mercy of … Continue reading

When You Have to or Want to Work After Baby

In this blog, the issue of whether or not you can afford to stay home with your baby was discussed. If after you have worked out your budget or tried living on just one salary for part of the pregnancy, and learned you really do need more than one pay check to make it, you may decide the best thing for your family is for you to work. For a completely different scenario, maybe you figured out that you could, in theory, make it on one salary, but would have to live at the bare bones minimum in terms of … Continue reading

Parenting Multiples: The Strain of Always Having to Share

My twins are almost three and now that I’m out of the fog of sleep deprivation and constant feedings, diaper changes, and other baby care duties–I have to say that having twins is a blast. Someone asked me recently if there was anything remarkable about the way they developed verses how singletons develop and what was the hardest part of parenting multiples. No doubt, had you asked me one year ago I would’ve answered that sleep deprivation was the hardest part of parenting multiples. By 5 or 6 months, all of my children woke once in the middle of the … Continue reading

Valorie’s Breastfeeding Index

Later today I will post a review of the baby blog of 2007 so why does breastfeeding get its own category? Well, in part as an answer to readers who want to read what I’ve written on breastfeeding. I’ve written so much on breastfeeding at this point that you all have asked for an index of sorts so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s also in part because I’ve become known as the breastfeeding lady. . .guru. . .whatever you want to call it. I’ve been at this breastfeeding business for a long time and many of … Continue reading

How Close Is Britney To Losing Her Kids?

Note to Britney Spears: If you haven’t already noticed, things are not looking good for you. Yesterday was a bad day for the former Mousekeeter and today doesn’t look any better. If you missed the crawls at the bottom of every news channel on TV, Brit-Brit’s manager and attorney dumped her less than 24 hours ago. A double dumping—-less than four hours apart from each other–that may be a new record. According to the singer’s now former manager (she’s bled through at least three since her infamous meltdowns), he was “saddened” (yeah, right) to confirm that he and Brit parted … Continue reading

The Spears Train Wreck Keeps Smoking

Pop princess Britney Spears has been dethroned, de-toxed, and more recently de-livered court papers that want her declared an unfit mother. No, things are not looking up for the former Mouseketeer. Let’s start with the recent court filing. According to Los Angeles Superior Court records, Spears ex, Kevin Federline has filed an order to show cause for primary physical custody of the couple’s two sons. (Basically, Fed-Ex is taking Brit back to court to have a judge render her unfit and do away with their current 50/50 custody arrangement so he can raise 23-month-old Sean Preston and 11-month-old Jayden James … Continue reading
