Reality Show Saving Lives?

I love watching “Biggest Loser.” I know a lot of people find the show unrealistic and think the contestants can’t possibly keep the weight off, but many do. One even gained all his weight back then lost it again. I find it amazing that many of the contestants come in so sick due to their weight, then often issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes virtually disappear with exercise, eating right, and weight loss. A new show just premiered that may help a lost group – overweight chefs. “Fat Chef” features a dozen overweight chefs. For four months, they … Continue reading

Foot Care for Diabetics

My father is a diabetic and if I don’t quit eating like I am and start exercising, I am headed in that direction. Since both my grandmothers were also diabetics, I probably know more about diabetes than the average person. One thing I learned from my grandmothers is that diabetics need to take good care of their feet. Why the focus on foot care? Well, if you don’t take good care of your feet, it can lead to amputation of toes, feet, or even your leg. Diabetics are more likely to have foot problems because of reduced blood flow to … Continue reading

Menopause and Muscle Tone

About a year ago, I got out of the shower. I was surprised to looked down and see my grandmother’s legs. No, my beloved, dearly departed grandmother hadn’t come into the bathroom. But, I noticed my legs had started to look like hers. Before you ask how I knew so much about my grandmother’s legs, let me explain. I lived with my grandmother for almost twenty years after the death of my mother when I was 19. My grandfather had died about five years before that. With my father remarrying, I decided to spend my 20’s and most of my … Continue reading

Too Much Work Can Harm Your Health

Some Americans define themselves by their work, so they work extra long and extra hard to accomplish their goals. Some Americans simply have to work long hours just to get by. Either way, working too much can be bad for your health. One thing it can cause is depression. This seems understandable. WebMD has said that working too many hours may make you less interested in your friends and family as well as neglectful in good care of yourself. Another problem that I worry about myself is sitting too much. I get involved in a web page or a blog … Continue reading

Coupon Crackdown

All good things must come to an end. It’s a sad, but true fact of life that is now affecting the world of extreme couponing. Thanks a lot extreme couponers… and TLC for making their lives into a reality TV show seen by millions of penny-pinching viewers. Week after week inspiring expert couponers tune into “Extreme Couponing,” which profiles extremely frugal individuals making a killing at stores that allow them to double or triple their coupons. I watch the show quite frequently and bemoaned the fact that stores in my area are no where near as generous with their coupon … Continue reading

Our “Jon & Kate” Moments

With all of the controversy surrounding TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus Eight, I started thinking about what life might be like if we were on a reality show and cameras were catching our every move. Would I be like precise no-nonsense Kate Gosselin or like nurturing Aunt Jodi? And what kind of awkward moments would be captured for all of the world to see that would have people wondering about the parenting style we use with our little ones or actively criticizing our lives. The hairdo A lot has been said about Kate’s wacky hair do that she calls her … Continue reading

Taking Out the Trash

My children don’t seem to understand the difference between garbage and treasure. They hang on to every scrap of paper, yogurt container, soda bottle, tin foil bit, and inch of string. Every time I help them clean their rooms, we have deep discussions over what constitutes garbage and what really is worth keeping. I always throw out at least two garbage sacks of treasures, mostly for sanitary reasons but also for sanity reasons, and they are in tears because of it. I can’t wait until they are finally old enough to get what I mean when I say, “that’s garbage” … Continue reading

The First Thanksgiving Website

This gorgeous website from Scholastic teaches kids and adults all about the first Thanksgiving, with a realistic perspective and plenty of activities for children and adults. “They spent two months at sea to reach a strange new world, and barely survived once they got there. “Learn how the Pilgrims reached America and lived to celebrate the first Thanksgiving.” I have to say that Scholastic really came through with this website all about the first Thanksgiving. The website packages the first Thanksgiving much like a reality television show, complete with photos and three live chats where students can ask questions and … Continue reading
