Can Your Realistically Fire Your Insurance Company?

Mitt Romney recently gave a speech where he talked about health insurance. In part of that speech, he said something that sounded as though he enjoyed firing people. He was talking about firing one’s health insurance company. Politicians should be extremely careful about the words they choose to say during an election year. Specific phrases, when taken out of context, can be used by a person’s opponents to make him or her look bad. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to learn that this sort of thing happens, or that it is a tactic that has been frequently used … Continue reading

Safety is a Good Choice for Your Health

For a large portion of the year, it’s dark when I drive to work at the cats-only boarding facility. I usually take a back road, rather than the highway — less traffic, nice scenery, a better ride all around. This particular road has very little in the way of shoulders — and no sidewalks — for bikers and walkers. Two mornings in a row, I’ve encountered someone who didn’t take safety seriously. One was on a bike, riding down the middle of the road. Thankfully, I saw the bike’s reflectors and knew something was in my path… but didn’t make … Continue reading

Pet Owner Poll Tackles Health Issues

Would you perform CPR on your pet? Do you know how to do it? These are just a few of the questions asked of pet owners in a recent poll. In October 2009, Petside.com and the Associated Press sponsored a survey of pet owners about health care and emergency care. Nearly twelve hundred pet parents participated in the phone survey, answering questions about emergency plans, health care, and common owner boo-boos. More than half of those surveyed would indeed try to perform CPR on their pets in the event of an emergency. (The number was higher in dog owners than … Continue reading

Sneaky Ways to Remember Your Sunscreen

Memorial Day has passed here in the States, and that means it’s semi-officially summer! Sure, you can count June 21st as the official start of summer if you like, but the pool’s open so it’s summer to me! (Back home at the Jersey shore, Memorial Day is also the official start of the summer tourist season, so that’s another good reason in my book.) In fact, I’m planning to spend a good chunk of the afternoon lounging by the pool with a book. That means it’s time for my annual nagging about wearing sunscreen! I’ll be the first to admit … Continue reading

What to Do If You’re Concerned about Lead Paint in Your Pet’s Products

Yesterday I wrote how children’s toys aren’t the only thing testing positive for lead paint. So are pet products, like food and water bowls and bird cages. Here’s some things to keep in mind if you’re worried about pet products you have in your household: 1) Check labels. Made in China instantly makes me wary anymore, but that doesn’t automatically mean lead’s in the paint. Also, some products specifically indicated paint used contains lead. 2) If labels are no help and you want to determine if your pet’s bowls or toys contain lead, buy a testing kit. (Options include the … Continue reading

Good For You, Good For The Earth

Want an extra feel-good boost for your workout? You can make choices that are beneficial for your community and the entire world! Do you know how many plastic water bottles get thrown out every day? Eighty million. That’s a LOT of water bottles — I have a hard time imagining eight hundred or eight thousand bottles… let alone 80 million! Rather than tossing your water bottle, stick it into a recycling bin. Better yet, reuse it yourself! You’ll save money and keep the bottles out of the trash. Skip the plastic water bottles entirely and switch to a refillable aluminum … Continue reading

When A Bargain Is Not A Bargain

I love getting a bargain. My house is mostly decorated in early yard sale, late thrift store. I’m seldom opposed to buying or receiving something used. I like the character that comes with an older table or dresser. Chairs that are a different style and can be painted to fit in with my eclectic decorating style are always a favorite. As are little odds and ends that you can’t find anywhere else. No matter how much I love a bargain there are some things I will not buy used, it’s not worth the risk. When it comes to children’s safety, … Continue reading

Our Fears Are Situational

It seems that every day I learn or discover something new about myself. Being a single mother has helped me grow in ways I never imagined. One huge thing I’ve learned is that fear is situational and what you are afraid of will change depending on where you are in your life. For instance, I’ve always been afraid of spiders, now that I am a single mother, I am the person who has to deal with the spiders. I can’t scream and run into the other room waiting for someone to kill it, I have to kill it. I have … Continue reading

Nutritious Summer Foods For Toddlers

Parents of toddlers often have a dilemma on their hands at meal time and snack time. There’s a hungry little person who needs something to eat. That hungry little person may regularly change what he or she will and won’t eat. Also, as the person responsible for the health of that hungry little person you have your own ideas and plans for what kinds of things you will serve. Feeding your toddler right can be a challenge. Fortunately, summer time is here and there are quite a few nutritious foods available that most toddlers love to sink their teeth into. … Continue reading
