Study Says Flu Shot is Safe for People With Egg Allergies

Flu season is upon us. Are you going to get a flu shot this year? There has been some concern in the past that adults and children who are allergic to eggs will have problems if they get a flu shot because it contains eggs. A Canadian study found that flu shots are safe for people with egg allergies. The flu vaccine is designed to prevent people from catching influenza, (commonly called “the flu”). There have been concerns about giving flu shots to adults or children who have an allergy to eggs because the flu vaccine is grown in chicken … Continue reading

Special Needs Podcast Roundup – Week of July 6, 2011

There are plenty of podcasts out there that talk about parenting. Not all of them are specifically focused on special needs, but you can find episodes where a particular special need is talked about. It is also good to look for video podcasts as well as audio podcasts that discuss special needs. These resources may not be very easy to find, but I have located some great ones this week. Here is the Special Needs Podcast Roundup for the week of July 6, 2011. Not all of the podcasts featured were necessarily released this week. Some were made earlier this … Continue reading

Bristol Palin Gives Baby Daddy the Boot

Some things are better off left unsaid, but in the case of teen parents Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston, so much has already been said it would be pointless to institute a gag order now. Nice try, Levi. If you haven’t already heard–in what has to be this year’s biggest NON-newsworthy event–18-year-old Bristol Palin, daughter of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has decided that she is better off without her baby’s daddy in her life. Translation: Bristol ended her engagement to fiance Levi Johnston. According to reports, the split took place a few weeks ago. Rumors of a split began circulating … Continue reading

Three States Request Volunteer Ban of BPA in Baby Products

You gotta love Connecticut, New Jersey and Delaware. In regard to protecting mothers and children, they have been doing a lot of progressive things, such as policies and laws on breast-feeding, maternity leave and more. And now, here they are again taking a proactive stance against the use of the chemical bisphenol A or BPA. This chemical has been linked to all sorts of health conditions in studies, from abnormal growth to heart disease. The Food & Drug Adminstration (FDA) has declared the chemical to be safe in these products, although they don’t seem confident in their conclusions. Critics say … Continue reading

Disney’s 10 Best Non-Animated Features

We’ve talked about the best animated features, but Disney makes non-animated features as well. Some are great, some are classics and some are just films that could have been so much more. We’ll talk about the bad movies later, but for now, let’s look at my top ten picks for best non-animated features. 10. Rocketeer (1991). In this utterly charming, live action pulp comic, Bill Campbell plays a young Cliff Secord, a pilot who stumbles over a rocket pack and uses it to stop the Nazis. Sure, it’s pure cheese, but it’s sharp cheese. 9. Sky High (2005). Heroes are … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for March 3-9

Aimee and I were busy beavers last week. In case you were too and missed any of our articles, here’s our Week in Review recap for your cheating (er, I mean catching up) pleasure… Monday, March 3 In Aimee’s first Diary of a Cat Care B&B entry for the week, she discussed her bulletin board she’s assumed responsibility for and asked for suggestions. Me and my crew presented “The Case of Who Cut the Cheese” after a stinky episode in our house Friday night. Aimee detailed the four most common worms in pets. Tuesday, March 4 Have you ever wondered … Continue reading

Born Yesterday (1950)

Before Don Johnson, Melanie Griffeth, and John Goodman made their 1993 movie “Born Yesterday,” a version was filmed starring William Holden and Judy Holliday. This film was made in 1950 in black and white, and is a cleaner, yet louder, movie, William Holden is a journalist named Paul Verrall. He has been assigned to interview self-made millionaire Harry Brock about his success in the scrap metal business. When he goes to the hotel to meet with Brock, he’s taken aback by Brock’s bossy attitude and loud temperament. He’s also taken aback by Brock’s fiancé, a pretty blonde by the name … Continue reading

Ice Castles (1978)

Every so often when I blog about a movie, I get so wrapped up in the emotions I felt while watching the film that I just have to sit and sniffle for a minute before I can write. I loved “Ice Castles” to the point of silliness, and so pardon me a moment while I sit and sniffle. Thank you; I believe I can now go forth. I’ve mentioned how much I love figure skating and how much I love romantic movies. This one just hit the spot in so many ways. Lynn-Holly Johnson stars as Lexie, a sixteen-year-old girl … Continue reading

Hurricane Sandy Relief Continues to Pour In

Hurricane Sandy happened almost a month ago, but the devastation it left in its path will take a long time to clean up. There are still about 120,000 people without power in New York and New Jersey, but that also includes homes there were too damaged to have power anyhow. If anything good came from this, it is the generosity of Americans. Some physically went to damaged areas while others gave what they could to help the victims. I already wrote about celebrities that gave to Hurricane Sandy relief, but it is worthy to note that Lady Gaga donated $1 … Continue reading

The Origin of Fathers Day

Yesterday was Fathers Day, and as we were celebrating Fathers Day this weekend I realized that I did not know anything about the origins of the holiday. Of course once I realized this, I could not just let it pass without finding out how Fathers Day started. What I discovered was that it all began in 1909 when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a sermon on Mothers Day. Her mother had died during childbirth and her father, a Civil War Veteran, raised Sonora and her five brothers and sisters on his own after her death. Sonora … Continue reading
