Frugal Food: Make Your Own Chewy Granola Bars

My kids are crazy for those chewy granola bars. They love to take them with their school lunches or to the park when they might need a snack. They are very convenient to have. Unfortunately, the price of chewy granola bars has been rising, all while the amount you get in a package has been shrinking. Combine that cost with the unsavory ingredients in some of them (“natural” versions are even more expensive), it only makes sense to create my own homemade version. I experimented with a number of recipes but wound up settling on one that uses honey as … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Medicine Cabinet

My family has been packing for a trip to Texas. So it has required me to take more notice of things that need to be organized. We were trying to decide which medications to take, such as something for car sickness, ibuprofen, migraine and allergy medicine. But finding what I needed proved to be a challenge. That’s because I realized how completely disorganized my medicine cabinet was. And I ended up having to throw out items that were past their expiration date. So I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to clean it out. That required emptying it first. … Continue reading

Study Finds Medicine in Asthma Inhalers May Affect Growth

A new study that was published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that children who use certain types of medication in asthma inhalers may be shorter as adults. Previous to this study, it was thought that kids would “outgrow” that effect. It seems that this is not the case. Let me make something clear. The results of this study do not mean that you must throw out your child’s asthma inhaler. If you have concerns, you should definitely speak with your child’s pediatrician before making any changes to his or her prescription medications. In September of 2011, the … Continue reading

How Much Do You Value Your Life?

How much value do you place on your life? I was reading an article in the “Huffington Post” the other day where it was reported that by the year 2030, there will be 42% of Americans who are obese. Think about that…nearly half of the population in this nation will be at risk of developing serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. And that’s not even taking into consideration those who don’t quite fall into the obese category, such as the overweight. After I read this article the first thought that crossed my mind was, “Do we really … Continue reading

Do You Take Medical Advice from the Internet?

When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter I made a beeline for my local book store where I proceeded to empty my wallet purchasing every parenting guide under $25. I voraciously consumed the stack of parenting advice books penned by so-called experts. Then, I gave birth and everything I read pretty much evaporated into thin air. Seven years later, I’m still learning how to raise a child. However, these days I rely more on instinct than other people’s opinions and experiences; which is not to say that I’ve stopped reading studies on what makes kids tick. Rather, … Continue reading

Avoid Medication Mistakes

You need to take charge of your health and prevent any medication mistakes that could have serious consequences. Many people make these common mistakes and don’t realize it until it is too late. Arm yourself with knowledge, for your own health and the health of your family. Don’t Take Liquid Medicine with a Spoon Do you grab the teaspoon in the drawer to take your liquid medicine? If so, you are probably taking more medicine than the dosage requires. Regular kitchen spoons come in many different sizes, and they usually hold more than a measured teaspoon or tablespoon. Your best … Continue reading

Is Your Job Overrated?

The other day, Stephanie Romero wrote a wonderful post about the most depressing jobs. Recently, I came across an article on CNBC that talked about the twelve most overrated jobs. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, not only because one of my jobs is on this list but also because some of these jobs are the kinds of things that well meaning parents push their children to aspire to even though they do not really know anything about what having one of those jobs is really like. I know from experience that it is hard to … Continue reading

Time to Clean the Medicine Cabinet

My bathroom often gets overlooked when it comes time to organize. After all, everything can be contained behind cabinet doors and in drawers so is there really a need to organize this part of my home? Yes there is, if for no other reason than to make sure you are not using old and out dated medicines for your family. Usually outdated medicines are simply not as effective but in some cases they can become toxic so it’s important to clean them out regularly. The medicine chest is the best place to start, take everything out and as you do, … Continue reading

Keep A Close Eye On Your Teen’s Medications

If your child has ADHD, then it is a very good idea to keep a close watch over the prescription medication that your child is taking. It is not unheard of for teenagers and young adults to sell some of their medicine to their peers, or to give a few of their pills to a friend. How well do you trust your child? Parents of children who have ADHD usually realize that there is the potential that certain types of medications can be addictive. Parents who are especially concerned that their child will become addicted to his or her medication … Continue reading
