In Memoriam 2012 – Part 1

It’s that time of the year again – to reflect on those we have lost.  Some deaths might have been expected, but many came as a shock to us.  Either way, all will be missed. January 2012 1 – Etta James – Leukemia (73) James had a beautiful voice and was lucky enough to see it appreciated by a whole new generation when songs such as “At Last” became popular again in the 2000’s.  James won six Grammys and 17 Blues Music Awards.  Her music crossed genres as she was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame … Continue reading

Disney Cruises in 2012 and 2013

I haven’t reported as much on the Disney Fantasy as I did on the Disney Dream. The latest in the Disney fleet makes its maiden voyage in just a few weeks and yet this is the first that I’m reporting on it. That’s because there hasn’t been a lot to say; the Fantasy is quite similar to the Dream. It’s beefed up a bit, but it’s basically a bigger, fancier version of the Dream. Now the Fantasy is set to make its first trips, however, and the time has come to talk about it. For the first time a christening … Continue reading

The Movie “Five” Part 2

Hello again I am continuing talking about the movie “Five” that is a Lifetime movie directed by 5 fabulous women. If you read my last entry I was talking about how a little girl named Pearl in 1969 was affected by the loss of her mother to breast cancer. The next short film was “Mia” this followed a woman who was given the stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis. It showed a different perspective, one of a woman who thought her only future was a certain death. She lived and traveled like there was no tomorrow because like many woman facing … Continue reading

Five Things I Couldn’t Live Without During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is all about finding ways to be comfortable and distract yourself, because let’s face it, pregnancy is anything but comfortable. Your hips are killing you, you can’t get a wink of sleep, it’s hard to sit through a movie, and car rides can be intolerable. By focusing on the simple luxuries of life, you can get through the tough parts of pregnancy. Every woman has her own list of favorite things during pregnancy. Here were mine: 1. McDonald’s fish sandwiches. I couldn’t tell you what the lure behind these was, but I could not get enough of McDonald’s fish … Continue reading

Lifetime Movie about Foster Care airs Saturday

Tomorrow night (Saturday February 28), the cable channel Lifetime will air an original movie about the foster care system, and more specifically about the dilemma of one teen, raised in foster care (and sometimes abused there), about to turn 18 and “age out” of the system. The teen’s name is America, which is also the title of the movie. I have written a past blog, detailing how teens in foster care are usually literally turned out on the streets on their 18th birthday. Often still in high school, it is a nearly insurmountable task to pay for an apartment, work, … Continue reading

Star News: New Celeb Hook Ups, Oprah’s New Movie, and Heather Mills’ New Cash Cow

Personally, I don’t find it a bit newsworthy that Elle Macpherson has found love again. NEWSFLASH: Super hot supermodel hooks up with a multi-millionaire! In other news… the sky is blue. The catwalk beauty has found another guy to worship her… SHOCKER! Still, for some reason Australian and British newspapers feel the need to fill their columns with details of Macpherson’s new romance with Damian Aspinall. When hasn’t Macpherson been involved with someone? She was previously married to Gilles Bensimon and engaged to French financier Arpad Busson, who fathered her two sons. Then, late last year the 44-year-old sexpot was … Continue reading

100 Things Every Marriage Should Experience Before Dying

Have you heard of the book 100 Things To Do Before You Die? (Not to be confused with 101 Things To Do Before You Die, which, while the title’s similar, is an entirely different beast of a book and was written by a different author, Richard Horne.) Dave Freeman, one of the 100’s co-authors, died this past August. I’ve never read the book, but I certainly got a sense of the man. Here’s a snippet from his obituary in the Los Angeles Times: The “100 Things” approach later swept the publishing industry, said Neil Teplica, who wrote the book with … Continue reading

The Major and the Minor (1942)

After reviewing “Never Been Kissed” last week and seeing that it’s considered a remake of “The Major and the Minor,” I decided I’d better see this film too, and compare them. Well, they’re both about a girl who pretends to be younger than she is and falls in love with an older man who is her mentor. And that’s where the similarities stop. But I did enjoy “The Major and the Minor” on its own merits. Ginger Rogers stars as Susan Applegate, a young woman who has left small-town farm life to come to New York to try to start … Continue reading
