But, I Can’t Teach Music

I Can’t Teach Music Experience tells me I am not the only one who has uttered these words.  When I embarked on homeschooling I considered many things.  I considered phonics, math, literature, history, and methodology.  I lived in the bright light of hope for my ability to homeschool joyfully and effectively.  My glasses were always rosy colored.  It’s easy to color your view rosy when you simply do not consider the road blocks.  I assumed I would figure it all out on the job.  Then one day, it happened.  My child developed a love for music and desired to sing … Continue reading

NFL Teammate Supports Newly Outed Former Player

It seems that one of the hardest things a gay person has to do is come out.  Many wait for just the right moment and often fear that it might alienate family and friends. But, what is you were outed in pubic?   That has to be the worse. That is exactly what happened to Kwame Harris this week.  Harris appeared in court Monday after his former boyfriend, Dimitri Geier, filed a civil suit against him.  Geier is charging the former NFL offensive tackle, who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, with domestic violence causing great bodily injury … Continue reading

Teaching Kids Self-Denial

I recently attended a symposium which featured a presentation by a childhood behavioral “expert.” Regular readers of this blog know how I feel about so-called “experts,” but this guy had a host of impressive credentials, not the least of which included raising eight children into incredibly successful young adults. Plus, I was very interested in his topic: “Teaching Kids the Art of Self-Denial.” According to the expert, one of the most important “gifts” you can give your child as he develops into an adult is to teach him or her to “routinely deny himself immediate pleasures to achieve future good.” … Continue reading

Illinois Teachers Lose Retirement Insurance Benefits

It is now official. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has signed legislation that takes away the free health insurance benefits that were promised to retired government employees, including teachers. The purpose of this legislation is to help balance the budget for the state of Illinois. There was a point in time when I was living in Illinois, and working as a substitute teacher. Back then, my hope was to find full-time employment as an Art teacher in one of the public schools in Illinois. That plan didn’t work out. The state was in the process of cutting away Art positions, and … Continue reading

It’s A Never Ending Job

Walking in the door from work today I was sorting the mail, junk, bills, recycling, Kohl’s coupons. I let the dog out and emptied my lunch bag, trash in the trash can, dishes in the sink to wash later. I ran upstairs to use the restroom (over sharing, I know) while in there I noticed the toilet paper roll holder needed dusting, so I dusted it. I washed my hands and wiped the sink off, grabbed the towels from yesterday and threw them in the laundry. As I moved through the house doing all the things I do when I … Continue reading

Finding the Right Daycare

Many of us as single parents are forced to put our children in daycare at one time or another. Now that you only have one income the pressure to provide can be overwhelming. As much as you hate being away from your children, there often is no other option. Trusting someone else to care for your children while you are away can be a challenge for many single parents. You want to make sure they are well cared for, but you also don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for someone to do it. Naturally daycare can be … Continue reading

Summer Jobs For Your Teen

It’s almost summer time and for our teenagers that means summer jobs. As a single mother the decision to allow your child to get a summer job is a big one. If you need their help at home with younger siblings it may be out of the question, but is that fair? One of the huge expenses of all parents but particularly single parents is daycare so when you have a child old enough to take care of their younger siblings while you work, it can seem like a financial boon. The downside to that is that your older child … Continue reading

I Could Use a Spouse Right Now

What an experience this has been! Hailey was in a car accident on Wednesday. Fortunately everyone in both vehicles was okay. Unfortunately the car is totaled. These past few days have been really hard on my own. Being a single parent is physically exhausting but sometimes the mental exhaustion is worse. I felt so torn between staying with Hailey to make sure she was ok and doing all the things the insurance company needed me to do. Did I do the right things? I haven’t filed an insurance claim in twenty five years so I had no idea where to … Continue reading
