Suggested Health Screening Tests for Men

Okay guys… it’s not always easy to talk about health stuff. A lot of times, “toughing it out” can be tempting — rather than visit the doctor and go through a lot of weird tests. But regular screenings can help catch bad stuff early… and the earlier you catch stuff, the easier it can be to treat. If your doctor is anything like my doctor, you probably get your blood pressure checked every time you visit the office. If not, you should probably get your blood pressure checked every other year or so. There can be a couple different causes … Continue reading

Middle-Aged Women and Stroke

According to the American Stroke Association, more than one hundred thousand women in the United States under the age of sixty-five have a stroke each year. Compare that to the approximately 83,000 American women who suffer a heart attack! Most strokes occur when a clot blocks blood flow to the brain. There is another type of stroke that is comparably rare — a blood vessel in the brain bursting. If you’re going to worry about stroke (and you should), focus your worry on those clots. More statistics from the American Stroke Association: Stroke risk is highest in women between the … Continue reading

Health and the Firstborn Child

Studies are showing that birth order can actually have an impact on health. You can’t help the order that your children are born in. But knowing what ailments are likely to strike your oldest child can help you keep them safe, happy, and healthy! Firstborn children score an average of three points higher on IQ tests than younger siblings do. Smarts are good, this is better: research from the University of Glasgow suggests that children who score higher on IQ tests are less likely to develop coronary heart disease and some cancers. Firstborn children are more likely to suffer from … Continue reading

Real Men…

In honor of Father’s Day and Men’s Health Week, let’s take a look at what makes a real, healthy man. Real men have feelings. You don’t have to be the strong, silent hero. If something hurts or doesn’t feel right, talk to your doctor! Real men have a support network. Family, friends, coworkers — people you can turn to if you need help and people who look to sometimes you for help. A true support network should be a give-and-take. Real men go to the doctor. A yearly check-up will help you catch any possible health problems early — when … Continue reading

Five More Major Health Threats For Men

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list of the top ten killers of American men. The first two (heart disease and cancer) do most of the work, and were responsible for more than half of all male deaths in 2003 (the most recent data available). But just because a health threat is lower on the list doesn’t mean you can ignore it. Diabetes. Approximately three percent of all male deaths in 2003 were caused by diabetes. Weight is a big risk factor for diabetes; complications of diabetes include heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Influenza and … Continue reading

The Effects of Off Gassing on Our Children

When Maggie was born, I knew little about off gassing. I knew it existed, I knew it caused problems, but I wasn’t overly concerned. Then she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and protecting her lungs became our number one priority. That is when my husband and I began to pay much closer attention to the products in our home. We rid our house of chemical cleaners and bleach and we keep the windows open as often as possible. We also used no VOC paints and run air purifiers throughout our home. Off gassing has become a serious threat to our … Continue reading

Don’t Sit Idle

Yesterday, I decided to go to the drive-thru of a new hamburger place here in Jacksonville, N.C. Because it is “new,” the line was long and traffic was backed up. As I sat there waiting and idling, I remembered how bad idling is. Why is sitting in an idling car bad? First, there is the emission it releases into the air. It can be so bad that if your city is in a basin like Salt Lake City, the car emission can become trapped, causing smog and unhealthy air. Students in Salt Lake City recently drafted an anti-idling resolution, which … Continue reading

Be Kind to Your Kidneys and Liver

The human body is pretty amazing. Despite all the wear and tear the body gets on a daily basis — inside AND out — it still keeps going. Your liver and kidneys play a huge role in keeping the body clean on the inside. The liver has hundreds of functions, but one big one is filtering bad stuff (like bacteria) out of the blood. It’s also essential for digestion — the liver produces bile, which breaks down fat so the body can digest it. It’s a multitasking marvel! Your kidneys are waste and water processors. On a daily basis, they … Continue reading

A Man’s Reaction to Fatness

Did you ever ask a man, “Do you think that I am fat?” Try it just once and see what happens. This is a true story. It was not done to be cruel, but more as a curious thing to do, to see their reactions. Someone that I know did this recently and I was witness to it. To tell you the truth, it was very interesting. This friend of mine and I were talking about feeling fat. It was an easygoing, humorous type of a conversation. She then says, “Watch this, I want to see if he gets nervous.” … Continue reading
