Scientists Find Genes that Link to Migraine Headaches

A genome-wide association study reveals that there are three specific genes that appear more frequently in the DNA of migraine sufferers than in the genes of those who do not get migraine headaches. One of these genes only seems to affect women. It is entirely possible that a person can inherit those genes from her parents, and end up having migraines. Does someone in your family suffer from migraines? Chances are that person is female, and that she is not the only female relative or ancestor on your family tree that has a tendency to get these debilitating types of … Continue reading

Headache Medicine

I’ve been getting headaches recently. I’ve been working a lot. I’ve been working late. I’ve been working early. The candle has been burning on both ends in a desert. My candle is melting and as a result my brain has been hurting. Headache medicine has proved unsuccessful for removing the pain in my brain and I’ve been seeking out other methods. More sleep was the first attempt but that fell apart when I realized that there were no additional hours in the day to slumber. My schedule is already quite busy so I was wondering what I could possibly do … Continue reading

Types of Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary for preparing the lining of the uterus for implantation and to support the pregnancy in the early weeks. For various reasons, some women don’t make enough progesterone naturally for this important function. In this case, progesterone supplements will be prescribed. Inadequate progesterone levels can be detected via a blood test shortly after ovulation. An ultrasound scan is often done if you are under treatment for infertility to check the lining of the uterus. If a progesterone deficiency is suspected or blood tests come back low, an endometrial biopsy may be done to get … Continue reading

Types of Leukemia

Your bone marrow produces three types of blood cell: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen through the body. White blood cells help fight infection. Platelets help with clotting. In people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal cells may work normally at first, but can crowd out normal, healthy blood cells and make it difficult for blood to do its work. Leukemia can be divided into two groups, depending on how quickly the disease develops and progresses: Chronic leukemia gets worse slowly. Abnormal blood cells can still do … Continue reading

Chronic Headaches Linked to Depression

A recently published study from the University of Toledo has found that women who suffer from chronic headaches are at a greater risk for depression. Approximately eighteen million women in America suffer from headaches. The University of Toledo-Health Science Campus study had more than a thousand participants from five states who visited headache clinics for treatment. More than half the women in the study (593) reported less than fifteen headaches per month; this is classified as “episodic” headaches. The rest of the participants (439) reported more than fifteen headaches in a month. More than fifteen headaches each month is classified … Continue reading

Holiday Headaches: Dealing With Stains–Part 2

Nothing takes the Merry out of Christmas or the Happy out of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa than a big grease stain on your brand-new winter white linen tablecloth. Family get-togethers are the highlight of the holiday season, but when you put together rich and colorful foods with, well, colorful family members you could be looking at major messes in the making. In our family we don’t let stains caused by Uncle Fred’s enthusiastic arm gestures dampen our holiday spirits. My mom is the queen of stain removal and uses the following techniques to keep her holiday best from turning into… rags. … Continue reading

Dangers of Exercising in Hot Weather

I don’t know what the weather is like in your neck of the woods. But here in Wisconsin we are experiencing unusually warm weather. In fact, I was just watching a newscast this morning and the weatherman said that normally we might experience a day or two in any given week with temps in the 90’s. But the temperatures have been in the 90’s, with high humidity consistently for days now, with no relief in sight. Now for those who are used to this or live in areas of the country where it hits triple digits, I’m probably not getting … Continue reading

The Confusion Surrounding Gluten-Allergies

There are a lot of people who don’t have a good understanding about gluten allergies, celiac disease, or the differences between them. Some people think that a person chooses to eat a gluten-free diet for no other reason than to lose weight. Here is a quick explanation of the confusion that surrounds gluten-allergies. Celiac disease affects about 1% of the population. It is a genetic condition that causes a person’s body to be unable to tolerate, or properly digest, gluten. It actually causes damage to that person’s intestines. The inability to absorb food can lead to other health problems, like … Continue reading

Acupuncture Could Help Alleviate ADHD Symptoms

Acupuncture has been used to relieve pain, to alleviate allergy symptoms, and to help with a variety of other health issues. Some have found that acupuncture helps children who have ADHD, by reducing some of their symptoms. It is not a “cure”, but it can be a useful, additional, treatment for ADHD. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that has been around for more than 2,000 years. The National Institutes of Health have done studies that show that acupuncture can be effective for certain types of health problems. They specifically focused on people who were receiving acupuncture for back … Continue reading

Selling for Others on Ebay: Part 2

More things to consider before selling for clients on Ebay: Left Items: What happens when items do not sell? Will the client pick up the items or will the client just leave them for you to deal with? You need a policy in your contract that states any item left for a certain number of days becomes your property. Point this out and have the client sign it. I had a problem with this when a client left items in my home for six months. I did not feel I could dispose of the items because they did not belong … Continue reading
