Learning to Share a Bed

I had always slept in a twin-sized bed, and I liked my blankets just so and my pillow just so. I liked to toss and turn before I went to sleep. I was not used to sharing a bed with anyone. Then I met my husband. He too liked to sleep in a certain way, and he was not used to sharing a bed with anyone. Our wedding day was beautiful. The weather was gorgeous, the ceremony was touching, we were surrounded by friends and family. Then cold, hard reality set in. We are both blanket hogs. We spent the … Continue reading

Waking Up On The Wrong Side Of The Bed

Almost everyone has probably heard that expression before. You feel grumpy or are having a bad day and someone says, “What’s wrong with you? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?” Although it doesn’t really matter which side of bed we crawl out of in the morning, you can always tell when it’s going to be one of those days. Is it simply our mindset or a sixth sense when we awaken and can almost feel that gray cloud hovering above our heads, warning us that today will not be a good day? As you stumble … Continue reading

“Psychic” Pets

A recent poll reported by Newser.com and conducted by The Associated Press and Petside.com concluded that many American pet owners believe that their pets are psychic or have a sixth sense on some level. The actual details vary depending on what questions people were asked. According to the poll, 2/3 of American pet owners believe that animals have a sixth sense about bad weather, and 43% of the people polled say their pets can predict bad news. Owners of both cats and dogs claimed that their feline or canine pets warned them either about poor weather or upcoming bad news. … Continue reading

Memories of Childhood

I was sitting back thinking the other day of my mother. Don’t get me wrong. I think of my mother every day, but not in the way I was thinking of her at that moment. There were six of us altogether. We had a big, old black and white television with two or three channels so TV watching was pretty limited. We had our record player. We had a swing set and even a little pool. We had more than most kids had back then, but the days were still long. My mother would keep us as busy as she … Continue reading

I Should Know Better By Now

I’ve been getting into the bad habit of staying up hours after my daughter is in bed. I used to go to bed at the same time as her, because she slept with us. Then she got pretty good at going to sleep on her own, so I’d wait an hour or so after she fell asleep to go to bed. These days, I spend a good 3 hours being awake after she’s down for the night. It’s been taking its toll on me, physically and mentally. If you don’t believe me, ask my husband. I’m not sure which looks … Continue reading

The Dangers Of Seeking Health Info Online

I’m sure that most people will agree that having the Internet is a wonderful thing for the most part. We can find interesting articles, interact with people, send away for free samples, file our taxes, even find true love online. There are also some bad things about seeking out information over the Internet as well. Some of the negative things are the fact that people can pretend to be anything and anyone they want. This doesn’t bode well for those trying to date since you may think you’re talking to someone who looks like Johnny Depp and the person ends … Continue reading

Sleeping Through the Night (For the First Time)

A sense of dread pounded in my chest as I rubbed my eyes and searched for the blurry green lit numbers on the alarm clock. It was nearly six in the morning. I realized my son had not woken up and part of me panicked. For the past four months he has gone from waking up 4 times per night to one; could this be the first time he slept all the way through, or was there something wrong? Just then I heard a little grunt and a sigh over the monitor. I breathed a sigh of relief and slumped … Continue reading

Fitness Confessions – The Sleep Study

I was appreciably nervous when I went in for my sleep study. Another confession time here, I actually postponed the study initially by two weeks because I caught a head cold. I didn’t plan to catch it, but starting just after Christmas; a head cold traveled around our family making the rounds and seemed to come back to our house every other week. But I only postponed by two weeks, so when the day of the sleep study came, I worked triple hard around the house. I wanted everything done. I had no idea what to expect when I went … Continue reading

There Are Days When I Wonder If I Could Get Any Crabbier…

Why is it that there are days when I feel incredibly swaths of peace and great gifts of flexibility—and then there are others when I am really unfit for public consumption? Even after all these years and all the lessons parenting and family life have offered me, I still have days when I am not exactly sure what I am doing here! It is a strange thing to feel basically content, and still get downright crabby and not even fully understand why. It isn’t like the realities of my daily life change all that much from day to day or … Continue reading

Chaotic Cat Chronicles: The Spooky Shriek That Pierced the Night

I never know what I’m going to get around here when it comes time to turn in for the night. Sometimes I get a peaceful, uninterrupted slumber. Sometimes I don’t. A Good Night’s Sleep Most nights I have company –Murphy. He can almost always be found sleeping at the foot of the bed. But some nights Mr. Meow comes to snuggle for a bit, other nights Tabby does, and on the rare and lucky night all three of them will join me. These are usually good nights when sleep’s plentiful. A Not So Good Night’s Sleep But then some nights … Continue reading
