Reality Check – Working During Nap Time Does Not Always Work

It is often useful to stop and think about whether things are going the way that you would like them to go for your home-based business. Today I realized that for months, I have been doing something that has been causing me a lot of stress. I am not sure why today was the day that I realized what I had been doing – it sure would have been useful to realize it and correct it earlier, but I guess it’s better late than never. What was I doing to stress myself out? I was scheduling myself to work during … Continue reading

Did Your Ancestors Witness A Disaster?

Some people really enjoy reading about disasters. Accounts of floods, fires, hurricanes, and accidents of all kinds do make for exciting reading, as I discovered today. Today I discovered a web site called GenDisasters, which has historical accounts of disasters of all kinds from all over the United States and Canada. It is a great resource for anyone whose ancestors lived through or perished in a disaster, as well as those doing historical research about cities and towns where the noteworthy events occurred. Oh, and of course, if you are one of those people that loves to read about disasters, … Continue reading

Listening to Your Body (and Interpreting the Message)

Two out of the last three days, I was attacked by a ninja. A ninja nap. It snuck up on me after my usual post-work routine: walk the dogs, feed the dogs, feed myself. I found my limbs sluggish and my eyes heavy, so I gave into the ninja nap. Three hours later, I woke up. (Both times.) Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes a nap catches me off-guard. I’ve got things planned, work to do… but I find myself sinking down into sleep instead. It can throw off my whole schedule for the rest of the day, but sometimes … Continue reading

More Proof that Exercise Helps You Sleep

This message couldn’t come at a better time for me: I’ve been having a hard time falling asleep. Bedtime comes and I’m tired (or so I think) — but then I sit there staring at the ceiling for a good hour before shuffling off to snoozeland. Maybe more exercise is the answer. It certainly works for kids. A new study from the University of Auckland in New Zealand found that the more activity kids get, the faster they fall asleep at night. And the converse is true, too: the more sedentary a child is, the longer it takes them to … Continue reading

Has Your Child Ever Been Injured in Gym Class?

I slammed my head and cut my lip during a high school gym class volleyball match… and I didn’t cry. In fact, I was elated by my fate because it meant that I would be afforded a week’s worth of excused absences and didn’t have to attend a class I despised. Unfortunately, injuries like my split lip are increasing at an alarming rate during physical education classes in the United States. According to a new report, injuries to American children during school gym classes increased by 150 percent from 1997 to 2007. The numbers come from 100 representative U.S. hospitals … Continue reading

“Slumdog” Star’s Crazy Father Beats Him

What a difference a week makes. Last Monday Slumdog Millionaire’s young Indian actors were wrapping up a dream-like trip to the United States where they were treated like royalty at the Academy Awards and later during VIP visits to Disneyland and the world famous Santa Monica Pier. Monday night they jetted back to their homes in Mumbai and now they are back in the headlines, but for all the wrong reasons. According to reports, the father of 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail has gone to the media begging them to publish a public apology for beating his son in front of … Continue reading

Keep Your Homeschoolers Inquisitive

When my kids were small, I looked forward to the day that all of their pressing questions would be answered, such as “Why is the sky blue”, and “Why do we have bugs”. We all know how tiring it is to have a hundred or more of such questions fired at you every day. The questions start around age 2 with “What’s that” and “What’s this”, and end sometime around the age of six, with of the last questions being “Where do babies come from.” I think they stop asking questions after this one because they know we aren’t exactly … Continue reading

What if You ALWAYS Feel Tired?

It is fairly common for the average single parent—especially those who have full time custody of their child or children—to feel tired. After all, it can seem like the day and all of its responsibilities are never done. We may work too hard, eat on the run, and never get a full night’s sleep. Feeling tired can seem normal. However, if you are feeling so overwhelmingly tired that you just can’t get any energy going, or if you are constantly sleepy, achy or distracted, it might be worth it to look into your exhaustion. While tiredness is typical for the … Continue reading

Just Doing the Best We Can

As much as we hate to admit it, we’re just mortals. We have limitations, we have aching backs, sometimes our feet are killing us at the end of the day. We get headaches. We run out of steam. There are days when we leap out of bed, read our scriptures, prepare a wonderful breakfast for the whole clan, get all the laundry done, our visiting teaching calls made, knit a sweater, and make bread all before noon. Then there are days when it’s all we can do to roll over and glare at the alarm clock. We feel as though … Continue reading

Don’t be a Doormat

Let’s face it, we single parents get tired; we get run down and overwhelmed once in a while and there are days when we just get tired of putting up a constant fight. Whether it is coming from our kids who are pushing us to get their own way, and Ex who is pushing or harassing us to give in to his or her demands, or things going on at work or in other areas of our lives, I do think it is important to stand our ground. While you may not want to fight, it is important not to … Continue reading
