Could Too Much Milk Cause Colic-Like Symptoms In Your Baby?-Part II

While I’m no expert on this subject of overactive letdown and oversupply of milk, I’m excited to share this information with other Moms! I’m still trying to figure this all out myself, because my hope is that my baby who is suffering from the same symptoms I spoke about in Part I of this article, is actually having a problem with my supply, and NOT a problem with the foods I eat. However, in my case, I am currently cutting out dairy, soy, chocolate, corn, eggs, and nuts. I also have a prescription for an acid reflux medication if dietary … Continue reading

Could Too Much Milk Cause Colic-Like Symptoms In Your Baby?-Part I

Although I am now breastfeeding my third child, I am just now looking into oversupply, and overactive letdown as reasons for why my baby is so fussy. I have always known that I had no problem producing enough milk for my babies. My first two kids were nice, chubby babies, and I have never been able to relate to women that don’t have enough. Although, I am fully aware that this is a real problem for many Moms. But, did you know that too much milk can also be a serious problem too? I didn’t, until recently, and honestly, it … Continue reading

Family Favorite: Broccoli Cheese Soup

If I ever want my kids to eat their broccoli, I just cook it up into this soup! While this is not exactly a diet recipe, since it is a cream soup, it still packs a lot of nutrition in it. Paired with a crusty bread, it makes a hearty meal that keeps everyone satisfied in the winter months. Because this is a cream soup, I would not recommend freezing it. We usually don’t have any leftover to freeze anyway. It will stay nicely in the fridge for up to three days. Reheat it to warm on the stovetop for … Continue reading

Home Remedies for Colic Probably Won’t Work

According to a new review, based on fifteen different studies, most at home remedies for colic don’t work. The studies compared such folk remedies as fennel seed, sugar water, and massage. While some of these things worked for some babies, there was nothing that worked across the board. If you’ve ever had a colicky baby, you know this to be true. In my own experience, what would work one night, would not necessarily work the next. And I had it easy. The worst experience I had with colic was with my middle child. She would cry from five o’clock in … Continue reading

No Impact Man Colin Beavan

In this Green Blog, Mary Ann and I have made mostly unobtrusive suggestions of changing your everyday life to make it a little greener. Simple things like choosing reusable water bottles over bottled water, turning the lights off, and composting can make a difference. But, Colin Beavan decided to take it to a whole new level. Beavan, a non-fiction writer and blogger, decided that he and his family (including his wife and then 2 year old daughter Isabella) would try to live a zero impact lifestyle for a year. That means no trash except items that could be composted, food … Continue reading

Colic May Lead to Future Disease

Researchers are studying colic in babies, the one gastrointestinal condition that can stump even the experts. They have some interesting news about it, including identification of a bacterium that may be causing the condition, as well as a link between colic in babies and the later development of gastrointestinal disease into adulthood. Colic is characterized by inconsolable crying in an otherwise healthy baby. It has long been thought that some form of gastrointestinal discomfort is to blame. Colic can be dangerous not directly but because it can lead to frustration in parents, post partum depression and even harm to the … Continue reading

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is plain and simply the abnormal curving of your spine. Instead of it being vertically in line it has a curve or curves that misalign the back. This curving occurs in more females than males and has been known to run in families although the reason as to why is not clear. This begins in childhood and if not corrected can worsen as an adult. Check-ups most be done at regular intervals to track any worsening of the condition. In minor cases this is all that will be needed, but more severe cases of scoliosis will require bracing, surgery … Continue reading

Ask a Pets Blogger: Mucus in Stool

First off, I’m sorry that this is such a gross question! I’ve noticed lately that there seems to be a lot of mucus in my dog’s stool. He doesn’t seem sick otherwise. Should I be worried? No need to apologize — owning pets often means you deal with a lot of gross things. (So says the woman with the dog who eats cat poop and barfs green grass in the living room.) Your problem is one that I’m actually familiar with. Moose (he who eats “kitty roca”) has experienced this in the past. Mucus in the stool can be a … Continue reading
