What is Monovision?by Angel Lynn Diamond | More from this Blogger 28 Apr 2009 01:55 PM It happens right about when you hit the ripe old age of 40 or so. You start having to need to hold your book or the newspaper just a little bit further away from your eyes in order to see more clearly. This, my friends, is known as presbyopia. It is a normal part of the aging process of the eyes. What will work in helping you to see better are those little glasses that you can buy as a nonprescription remedy at most supermarkets, discount stores, and pharmacies. If you wear glasses though, this solution is out. You will then need bifocals. If you do not wear glasses or you wear contact lenses, however, there is another solution to the problem. This solution is what is known as monovision. When you opt for monovision you simply wear two different prescription contact lenses in each eye. The lens in one eye corrects distant, the lens in the other eye corrects near vision. Your dominant eye will wear the contact lens that governs distance. This solution works for most people, about 85 percent. Your eyes must accommodate and adjust to the change. The only drawbacks of monovision are having to compensate your vision sometimes by moving your head around for optimal sight and the loss of perception of depth. The monovision technique can also be surgically performed with LASIK and conductive keratoplasty. If you plan to attempt this surgery to correct your vision it is wise to first try the use of contact lenses first. Monovision can be a blessing to those of us who wear glasses and find them uncomfortable or who wear contact lenses and do not want to wear the other glasses for near vision. If you are interested in trying out monovision as a form of vision correction, see your optometrist for further information. Angel Lynn writes in weight loss, single parenting, and health.
