What Is Strabismus?

Do you know someone who complains of seeing double? Is there a slight crossing of the eyes? These are just two of the symptoms of a vision disturbance known as strabismus. Strabismus occurs when both of the eyes do not appear to line up in the same direction due to a defect in the coordination of the eyes. Many people refer to this condition as "cross-eyed".

It is unclear why this condition occurs or why it is most apparent in children. In the majority of strabismus cases it is discovered at birth or some time shortly thereafter. This type of strabismus is referred to as congenital strabismus. The person with this condition is unable to focus both eyes on one point.

Other symptoms of strabismus are loss of vision in an eye, depth perception dysfunction, and eyes that do not move at the same time, but independent of each other.

If any of these symptoms are noticed a physical examination should be done including a visual examination. You will most likely be referred to a specialist for the eyes known as an ophthalmologist who can determine the best form of treatment. A visit to a neurologist, as well, will likely be recommended to rule out any further medical conditions that may be contributing this problem.

Treatment for this condition should not be delayed as it could result in vision loss, also known as amblyopia, of one eye. Treatment will be in the form of eye realignment and strengthening of the eye muscles through exercises of the eye. Glasses or a patch may also be prescribed. In some cases surgery is indicated.

The earlier that strabismus is treated the better the chances are of correction of the problem. Strabismus and other vision problems should always be treated promptly by a health professional.
