Study Shows Why People With Autism Confuse Pronouns

A study that uses brain imaging reveals new information about why children (and adults) who have been diagnosed with autism tend to have difficulty selecting the correct pronoun to use. This could reveal some clues as to why people who have autism tend to have problems picking up social skills. Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in order to compare the areas of the brain that were activated when participants were doing a task that involved rapid comprehension of pronouns. The researchers included participants who were young adults that had high-functioning autism, and also a … Continue reading

So Why All the Mystery?

I hope you’re not too fed up with hearing about my uterus. It’s a pretty big deal for me, and a pretty major surgery on the horizon… so I’ve got a lot of processing to do. One lingering question isn’t so much about the health issue itself but about the mystery surrounding it. Why was my regular doctor not willing or able to make a definitive diagnosis when another doctor — faced with the same exact report from the ultrasound — did? I’ve come up with a few possibilities. For one thing, maybe the level of expertise is part of … Continue reading

Open MRI vs. Closed MRI

A friend of mine who had an MRI a few years ago described it as being inside a garbage can while someone pounded the outside with a rubber mallet. The noise, he said, was the worst part. Most people you ask find the closeness to be a problem. My grandmother — who has been ordered several times to have an MRI by various doctors — refuses because she is afraid to be enclosed in the machine. An open MRI is sometimes an option for people who are too large to fit in a closed MRI, or too claustrophobic to undergo … Continue reading

Adenomyosis: My Story Part #2 Pelvic Ultrasound and Endometrial Biopsy

In the first Blog of My Story shared some of the symptoms I was suffering with. My Normal was Different and all of my annual tests came back normal. My hormones were normal and I showed no signs of menopause. I was left to survive the holidays in pain and worry waiting for my next doctor’s appointment. In January I had a Pelvic Ultrasound. A small amount of saline water was placed inside my uterus to help see if there was “something” inside of it that might be causing the enlarging and hardening my gynecologist noticed. But, everything inside looked … Continue reading

Study Finds Kids With Autism Lack Language to Describe Behavior

A new study finds that kids who have an autism spectrum disorder are not accessing the language areas of the brain in order to identify behavior that is socially inappropriate. They can recognize the behavior, and understand that it is bad, but lack the language to effectively communicate about it. One of the symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder is that the child has great difficulty with social skills and in appropriately and comfortably navigating through social situations. Typically, the social cues and behaviors that children automatically pick up on as they grow are things that need to be systematically … Continue reading

ADHD Symptoms Get Clearer as a Child Ages

Does your child have ADHD, or is he just “active”? This can be a difficult question to answer if your child is a toddler. As your child ages, however, certain symptoms of ADHD become easier to identify. This could be why some children are not diagnosed as having ADHD until they reach junior high. Symptoms of ADHD include an inability to sit still for long periods of time, a difficulty with being quiet, a tendency to have problems focusing on a specific task, with following directions, and with listening to a person that is speaking to the child who has … Continue reading

A Mystery is Afoot!

Well… a mystery is a-uterus. First, a quick recap: I went to my doctor before New Year’s for a physical, including pelvic exam. After running down some of my monthly issues — and after finding that my uterus seemed enlarged, the doctor suspected I had fibroids and sent me off for an ultrasound. The results of my uterus are in… and they’re not quite clear. The ultrasound showed that I have two pretty good sized growths. One is inside the uterus; the other is outside the uterus. In fact, the outside growth is larger than my uterus itself. For the … Continue reading
